Daniel Quinn also writes about how overpopulation leads to hunger, which leads to more food production, which makes more people, and then when that food source fades, more people are there with the same amount of food leaving poverty and hunger.

Daniel Quinn also argues that "Everyone in your culture knows this. Man was born to turn the world into paradise, but tragically he was born flawed."(p. 83) He attempts to convince the reader that man believes he is stuck in this cycle of poverty, and that even if we wanted to we couldn't prevent it from occurring.

"Do you see the slightest evidence anywhere out there that man was the climax toward which creation had been straining from the beginning?" (p. 58) This question, posed by Ishmael, is one of the most powerful quotes in Ishmael. It is the essence of what Daniel Quinn is trying to express in this book, saying that man is not the center of the universe, that no matter how advanced man gets the universe will continue expanding around us, and there will always be things that we can't control or don't understand.

"You shouldn't have to settle for rabbits if what you want is deer."
(p.224) This quote is said by Ishmael's pupil when he finally figures out how to express the taker ideas and why it's better than the leaver ideas. It's an expression of the logic that takers use to explain why they do what they do. They don't want to live at the mercy of nature, they want to be able to choose what to do, when to do it, and how they do it, with no consideration of the consequences of that action.
