Mansa Musa was one of the richest kings and people ever recorded. When he came to power in the kingdom of Mali, he knew he could not control the kingdom all together. He separate the kingdom into provinces and put governors in to control them. Each village in the province had a mayor. The country was also gold rich and Mansa Musa had tons of it. Musa was a devout Muslim and on his trip to Hajj he gave away so much gold on the way to Mecca he had to ask for some to get back to Mali. Mansa Musa was a caring and generous person.

The king had a very big impact on the history of Africa. After giving out tons of presents such as gold, everyone knew his name. Because of him being so generous, it put Mali on the map. When he was so nice and caring it made people want to travel to Mali. After he visited Mecca he needed gold to get back to Mali and he had to borrow money from others. When he got back from Mecca he paid everyone back making him look more responsible and trustworthy. Mansa Musa had a big heart and always cared for others.

The trade route in Ancient Africa was called the trans-Saharan trade and it was a very important part of its economy. Gold and salt were the main trades on this route. Slaves were another thing traded on the trans-Saharan trade route. Major cities along the route became centers of trade. This moved goods across the dry, deadly Sahara desert.

Camels were a main transportation animal for the people on this trail. They would carry goods and people on their backs to get them from one place to another. Without them, the trip would be nearly impossible. A group of these camels and traders were called a caravan. There would often be 1,000 camels in a caravan, sometimes there could even be 10,000+. Caravans had a huge impact on Africa by making it possible to cross the Sahara desert.

Trans-Saharan Trade

The trade routes in Trans-Saharan Africa were very important, and were a big part in creating the kingdoms of Mali, Songhai, and Ghana. Goods from the Middle East, Europe, and Asia were brought into Africa through the Trans-Saharan trade system. The main goods brought in through this system were gold and salt. Gold was very valuable ,and salt was wanted to preserve food. These routes were also important ,because African cities obtained the resources they needed but did not have through using these trade routes.

People moved along the trade routes in large groups called caravans. Caravans provided protections from bandits, and camels were used to carry goods and passengers. Caravans usually included around 1,000 camels, but some could have as many as 10,000. The camels are fattened up before their journey to prepare them. The trade routes began when camels were domesticated by the Berber people of North Africa in 300 CE. These trade routes remained and were an important part of African trade until the the middle ages around 1500 CE.

The trade in Mali was always good for the merchants, who traveled much distance for this.

Even though he had an amazing turn out with trading, the empire grew so big, so Mansa Musa couldn’t handle all the request and needs. Due to this, he divides the empire into multiple provinces and elects governors to rule each provinces. This method solved ll trouble, but he continued to make sure issues were handle fairly and efficiently.

During the 8th century and to the early 17th century the Trans-Saharan Trade was used in Africa. The two major goods that were traded were gold and salt, but it also included ivory, slaves, and metal goods. There were multiple trade routes to get from city to city, but most had to go through the Sahara desert, hence the name. Since it took place way before cars were invented the fastest, best, and only mode of transportation used were camels. Camels traveled in large caravans of up to 10,000 camels, but typically caravans had 1,000 camels.

The Trans-Saharan trade impacted Africa greatly because it allowed various cities to gain wealth from trade, and taxes from the trade. Some trade routes passed through multiple cities and some of the cities took advantage of that by taxing the merchants passing by. The cities who were involved in the trade include Timbuktu, Gao, and Djenne. There were also sea ports which allowed more trade between different coastal regions. The Trans-Saharan Trade mostly helped boost the economy for west African territories but it also helped other places in Africa gain gold and other goods, but it also allowed religion and language to spread. Merchants would have to learn different dialects or languages depending on where they traded and conversations could often lead to religious talk which would help their religion spread.

The ancient empire of Ghana ruled from 300 to 1100 CE. They were very wealthy. They hand so much gold, gold that the arabs were interested in. the Ghanaian people want salt to preserve their food. This created a supply and demand that caused trade with the arabs. This lead to the spread of Islam throughout Africa. This causes all of Islam to be affected as now the population is spread through Africa and Asia. Many people began taking up Islam and began blending the two cultures like the Hellenistic people throughout the world. This causes some minor disputes, but many people do accept Islam as their main religion.
With this new trade and new supply of sciences not discovered by the Ghanaian people was introduced. this causes cultural and technological advancement. If there was no trade with the Arabs then the Ghanaian people probably would have been introduced to Christianity.

Mansa Musa impacted Africa by being able to put the kingdom of Mali on the map. He was loved by all even other people from other kingdoms, and when he would leave his home he would take performers and elephants with him. Mansa gave his gold to anyone and everyone he could find on his way to Mecca for that one trip that he had to make in his lifetime. But on his way back to Mali he ran out of money and had to ask for some just so he could get back home. The people didnt mind giving him money because they knew he would repay them. He was gone for a year, and to his delight the kingdom did well when he was gone. And this is some of why Mansa put the Mali kingdom the map.
