This is because not only was she described to smell like peppermint, but her clothing choices reflected peppermint-like colors such as variations of red and white. She is described as “She also wore high-heeled pumps and a red-and-white-striped dress. She looked and smelled like a peppermint drop” (21). While peppermint is actually green, peppermint drops are red and white. Similarly, peppermint can be seen as sweet and a tasty treat at first glance (as a peppermint drop) but actually a cool flavor that stings. Which is how many would see Miss Caroline.
