         <title>I believe it is very important to make sure that all students should feel safe within the classroom.  If a child is feeling frustrated or sad, it is important to help them find a way to feel safe and be able to trust you as the teacher.  Providing a safe zone is a wonderful idea to implement within the classroom.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There are many different circumstances and challenges that students are facing in today's day in age.  As educator's, we can not just ignore our students feelings, but instead be proactive in addressing these special situations.  The idea of having a "Safe Zone" in the classroom is a great outlet for students to decompress and take a break.  </div>]]></description>

         <title>A safe zone is a wonderful idea!  Perhaps we may discuss during our PLCs where we will have our classroom safe zones -- and where children may find safe zones outside of the classroom (e.g., in the cafeteria, on the different playground areas, and in specialist rooms).</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Often as educators, we forget that self-help, is crucial to our students education. One cannot do the best for his or her students, if one cannot be his or her best self. All else will follow, once we, teachers, take care of ourselves first. Once one is able to take care of the self, students will able to feel the genuity that their teacher portrays. <br><br>Only then can our students turn to us, not only in times of need, but in times of love as well. It is imperative that educators are there for themselves, and then for their students. One cannot solely help others, when they are not willing to help themselves.  </div>]]></description>

         <title>Students need to feel safe in order to learn. Safe zones or a commitment from a teacher that shows the students you care and they matter. That their feelings are valid . Creating a place for a child to express his feelings and or allow to express it without judgement , will create a better learning enviorment.</title>

         <title>The statistical data presented is staggering as it relates to child trauma. The video is definitely a revelation and reminded to me.  I will be more vigilant about listening to my students, offering a safe understanding person who listens.  This emotional support helps to provide a safe learning environment.  </title>

         <title>We all as children have experienced some form of Trauma</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>How are trauma is dealt with is soooo important. Just giving students a safe place for them to talk about their experience is a big help. Knowing you have a go to person that you are not alone that there is a community available to you. Years ago this may have been the neighborhood, or an extended family member, or school staff person. Creating&nbsp; safe , healthy communities is also a big support which is part of the reason for community schools or grassroots community networks with sections of towns and cities. <br>ACE scores are a way of measuring you own and others levels of trauma as a child.          <title>I believe it is important for all students to feel safe with in the classroom and school.   A safe zone or area in the class room would show our students that we care.  I also think that there should be areas around the school that could also be  safe zones.  This way if a student has difficulty outside of his or her room, he or she would know where else they could go. </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>These were excellent videos. It would be nice to see a safe zone in all classes because as the child moves up there is consistency so all kids would feel secure. Sometimes we should just be happy that the child comes to schools...perhaps unprepared...but in school. They felt secure to come to school in spite of what may have occurred in their home.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>Some of the strategies discussed are great ways to provide a safe and secure atmosphere for students.  Adding a safe zone to the classroom would be a great way for students who are experiencing these traumas to go to gather their thoughts before taking on their day.  Such zones may help students prevent negative behaviors which can sometimes occur as a result of traumas.  </title>

The strategies implemented by teachers, counselors ,building principal  will aid students in acknowledging their problems, and  help them feel safe.  The collaboration and efforts of everyone will help students feel that school is a safe environment and gradually build their confidence .</div>]]></description>

They are children and the way in which they choose to deal with these traumas can affect not only their learning, but their peers, as well. It is our job to ensure that students feel safe and comfortable in our classrooms, so they will express what is occurring to them or in their household. By implementing "safe zones" in each of our classrooms we will be sending the message to our children that they are safe and it is ok to express their feelings in school in a way that will be accepted.&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>As an educator I think one of my most important priorities has been to have a classroom that is safe.  I have always wanted my students to feel safe and supported emotionally, physically as well as educationally.  I also believe that a classroom can not be one size fits all because each of our students comes to school with a different suitcase filled with different supplies.  We do not know what has occurred with our students before they came to school that day.   We do not know what has filled their suitcase.  We need to teach them to believe in themselves by showing them we care  about them, we believe in them and that we have high expecatitions for them.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>When we signed up as a Paterson teacher, we all knew a lot going into it... there would probably not be a parking lot wherever we worked, contracts are far and few between&nbsp; and the students are not in "ideal" situations. Us Paterson teachers have big hearts and want the best for our students, inside the classroom and outside the classroom. It is sad to know that the statics that were displayed on the video pertain to our students. Being aware of the different types of&nbsp; warning signs that show our students are in danger is key to the success of the child's emotional, educational, physical and social behavior. They will thrive in each of those categories if they can learn to cope, adapt and resolve . Maybe our next workshop we can learn cues and sign to look for and how to help accordingly.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Trauma is something that is not always visible, especially in a child.&nbsp; They can be dealing with things that are not known to us as educators.&nbsp; In turn, these things could be causing children to act out or express what they are feeling inside.&nbsp; We may see this as "disruptive behavior" or just a "badly behaved student" but we may be misdiagnosing the student right off the bat.&nbsp; The challenge is trying to figure out what the actual problem is and then figuring out how to educate them as well as make them feel more comfortable in the situation that they are dealing with.&nbsp; Educating, as well as dealing with trauma, can be a difficult combination to deal with for us educators.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title> Many of our students experience situations that are very difficult for a child to handle and develop  a protective shield to be able to deal with things that might be bigger than them. Often children that need the most love, show it in the most unloving ways. Creating a safe zone within  the classroom is a great idea. Knowing there is a place within the classroom where they can go to when they are feeling overwhelm might be the only place they have to take a break and calm down. </title>

         <title>Children and Trauma….very eye-opening and very concerning.  The video really hit home when it said that trauma actually alters the functioning of the brain.  It immediately reminded me of one of my favorite shows which is Criminal Minds.  That show often deals with trying to catch a perpetrator before he/she is able to do further harm to other people.  Where I made the correlation between these videos and that show is that….in many of the cases….they discover that the perpetrator had experienced some type of traumatic event as a child.  Although it’s only a show, the same happens in real life.  Throughout history, some of the most disturbed…even notable people like Charles Manson…experienced trauma as a child.  Without the proper outlets, resources, or help….and given the fact that trauma actually has an impact on the way the brain functions afterwards…it surely can be a recipe for disaster.  Knowing these facts…it is more important than ever to make sure that we are there for our students.  School counseling and outside counseling should definitely be options that are considered.  Here is an excerpt from an article that I found.“Research shows that while up to 34 percent of children in the United States have experienced at least one traumatic event, between 75 and 93 percent of youth entering the juvenile justice system annually in this country are estimated to have experienced some degree of trauma.”There seems to be a direct correlation between criminal behavior and trauma.  It is definitely our job as educators to try and help our students feel a sense of safety and security.          <title>It is important to understand where a student is coming from.  We need to be able to reach the child to teach them.  They need to feel safe and wanted in school.  That&#39;s a big part of motivating them.  But we also need to be mindful not to overstep our boundaries also.  Open communication is always vital.  In our school, I think most students feel safe.  I feel we have created an environment of safety and security.  But we always need to improve and strive to be more open to new ideas.</title>
