Before beginning our research process, my students will complete a written questionnaire about what motivates politicians to run for office and why they have such a strong commitment to social justice (Prior knowledge). Then, my students will take a few weeks to complete their research using a variety of digital resources. When they have finished their presentations, they will fill out the same questionnaire as before to communicate their understanding (along with their actual project) about what motivates candidates to run and their source(s) of commitment to social justice. I will compare the written answers from the pre and post assessments looking for a few key pieces of data:

Length of response (in sentences) from pre to post

Difference in the length of time it takes for my students to fill out the questionnaire from pre to post

Depth of response from pre to post

Ability to include “topic specific” political vocabulary from pre to post

If I model safe and critical strategies to encourage the collection of information about politicians in America digitally (i.e. direct email correspondence with politicians, FaceTime chats, online research) with my 5th grade Islamic Studies class and then allow them the latitude to research on their own rather than limiting their mode of research to traditional means (textbooks and workbooks), to what extent will their outcomes display the ability to research and communicate deep, complex ideas of the different motivations to run for political office and source of commitment to social justice as measured by written responses before and after utilizing digital research/engagement methods.

This image represents the focus topic for my students on this project. My kids are going to be researching Muslim Americans in Politics, specifically focusing on their early life and education, motivation to run, campaign experiences, and political work/honors so far. I hope to inspire my kids to be advocates of justice from an early age and to enfranchise them as citizens to work towards positive change in our local and global community.
