Queen Njinga's Birth

Queen Njinga was born in 1583 in Ndongo (which is now known as Angola). Her dad was King Kilaunji, and her mom was Kangela. She had brothers and sisters and grew up a royal family.

When Njinga's dad died, her brother Ngola Mbandi became king. she helped him in decision making and other roles he didn't know. She was intelligent and knew how to deal with the Portuguese who wanted to control their land.

Portuguese's attempt to take over

The Portuguese were trying to overtake Ndongo. Njinga went to their governor to make some sort of peace. She got baptized and took the Christian name Ana de Sousa. She did this as a way for the Portuguese to trust her

When her brother died, Njinga became Queen of Ndongo. Many people disapproved of a woman was ruling, but she proved them wrong. She built an army, made alliances, and fought for her people's freedom. This showed she more prepared than her brother

When the Dutch came to fight the Portuguese, Njinga formed an alliance with the Dutch. She fought alongside the Dutch to try to kick the Portuguese out of Angola. This act of bravery inspired other local leaders to fight for freedom.

After many years of war, Queen Njinga finally made peace with the Portuguese. She ruled peacefully and even shared her religion Christianity in her kingdom.
