20 mins 240- 247 4/23
I have a feeling that Mr. Kendall, who claims his grandmother was buried where the lepers were, is Crow's brother. What is a shoal? I have heard of the word 'pier' before, but I wonder what it means...? "He was looking out across the southern sky as if at a lion creeping closer; but I saw nothing except blue, a few mare's tails on the horizon"- this paragraph is a bit confusing to me but I'm starting to understand what the author is trying to get at.

20 mins 247- 254 4/24
When Crow said she awoke and described the siren singing with flashing lights, she knew a ship was going down. This instantly reminded me of the Titanic along with a sad and scared feeling. What does listing mean? Brig or bark? Sloop? I cannot really imagine what a surfboat looks like- keep imagining a surf board instead of a boat. Tourniquet?

Wiley and the Hairy Man

This story was interesting at one point when I have heard that the hairy man had cow feet. This was interesting because it gave a little twist in the story, knowing he was like a cow in a way and was unable to climb up a tree. I liked the wisdom that Mammy had. She knew right away what to tell Wiley, and right away what to do to. She knew these things by studying about the Hairy Man. My question is, how was she able to study about the Hairy Man, without actually going up to him and studying him. She could only study at home, like she did, if she had a book to study about the Hairy Man. If this is true, how did the people/author(s) of the book know what to write, unless they have studied about the Hairy Man. Did they go right up to him and study? How did the people know how to study and write about the Hairy Man? Wouldn't he just drive them away? What was the relationship between Mammy and the Hairy Man? Did Mammy know about the Hairy Man because the Hairy Man is her husband and Wiley's Dad?

30 mins 255-268 2/25
"and sponging the salt off his face"- this made me think of pain because there was all of this sand in his hair, on his bloody wound. I can imagine this because instead of salt it was sand and salt really, really hurts on open wounds. Mr. Kendall is a real bully and I hate what he did to Osh and Miss Maggie, but I am glad that later, they have tied him up. Fledgling? Rafters?

I can connect because I have to do the same thing except on my floor, most of the boards creak. Stella had to oil the door with lard but does that do the same thing as oil? I can relate again because both Stella and I like the smell of the night air. Wary?
