Professional "Take Away" from Reviewing Resources

A key takeaway that resonated with me as a counselor is the urgency and critical importance of self-care for counselors. Self-care in demanding professions like counseling often takes a backseat due to the stressors of the profession—such as managing clients' emotional demands, dealing with traumatic stories, and maintaining empathy for clients—which can have serious consequences if not addressed.

Counselors' continuous exposure to traumatic or distressing events will reduce their ability to show empathy. Given the risks and potential liabilities associated with neglecting self-care, counselors need to prioritize it. Not only is it imperative, but it is also a moral and ethical duty. Failure to do so can lead to harmful effects on both the counselor’s mental health and professional effectiveness.

Reference:

Mantelou, A., & Karakasidou, E. (2019).

Self-care in the helping profession empowers counselors to stay grounded by giving them the vital emotional and mental space needed to revive, recharge, and regain balance. It enables them to manage stress better, maintain healthy boundaries, and continue supporting clients while safeguarding their own well-being.

Music/Scripture Meditation: As a mother of three young children under five, I’ve found comfort in listening to soft jazz or calming music paired with biblical scripture. This self-care practice helps clear my mind from the constant noise and overstimulation, allowing me to experience clarity and openness in my thoughts during that moment.

Outdoor Sun Break: I incorporate a daily self-care practice of taking a moment to step outside, allowing myself to soak in the natural sunlight and fresh air. During this time, I use breathing techniques to center myself, which helps calm my mind and rejuvenate my energy.
