Richard Pape a former newspaper journalist on the Yorkshire Post created this camp newsbook both as a past time and to keep up the morale of his fellow prisoners a significant number of whom were fellow Yorkshiremen hence the White Rose Club.

These shoes were made out of scraps of material Daphne Davidson found for her daughter Jennefer, born in Changi Jail in 1942. James Davidson was also in the jail, but the family was split up as women and children were separated from men. 2800 civilians were housed in Changi Jail, which was built to house 600 prisoners, and conditions were extremely harsh. Only a limited number of parcels sent by the Red Cross were received by internees there, and malnutrition and malaria were rife.
