This quote is said by The Giver. It is said to Jonas in an attempt to understand his feelings. Jonas and The Giver are talking about how colors have been taken away from the world. Jonas feels that it is unfair, using the picking of what color shirt you wear as an example. Jonas is having trouble articulating his feelings, when The Giver says the quote. This quote means that even though choosing, say, what color shirt you wear seems unimportant, it is a big part of being human to be able to choose. This is the first real instance of the theme and conflict being outright stated in the book; is it worth it to completely get rid of choice just to stop people from making the wrong ones? To me, this quote shows the power of human nature, and what rights we are entitled to. This is shown in the world through the difference between more authoritative governments and ones more focused on civil rights. When Jonas and The Giver are talking about deciding things for oneself, The Giver says, “It’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it?” In other words, being able to choose something for yourself is an important thing. The author is trying to make us see the err in the ways of the creators of this community. She is showing that choosing is an important power we have, and that taking that away may not be just. This quote is important because it shows the theme and conflict of the story. This can be connected to authoritarian governments, who often seek to take away other’s power to choose. This passage caused me to think a lot about these thing, and human nature in general

When Jonas talks about wanting people to have the choice to choose between a red tunic and a yellow tunic and choices are important, the giver states, “It’s choosing that’s important, isn’t it?” In other words, Jonas talks about how everyone deserves the chance to see all the colors he is now beginning to see. He wants the world to know what each color looks like and he wishes the world at least had little choice in what they wore. But is appalled by the citizens being able to chose their spouses and jobs, stating that that is too much choice being given to the people. The author is trying to make us see that choice is really important. It may be a simple choice like wearing a yellow shirt and blue jeans instead of a red sweatshirt and black shorts. But that choice is what gives us freedom. The choice is what makes this country free. If we did not have a choice, there would be no reason to be here. It shows us that choice really does take effect even if it is simple. That we should be glad we have the choice to do what we chose. This quote also reveals that the characters have no choice in what they wish to do. They do not see the color or decide what to wear. They must wear the same thing as the other people of their number or job. You are not given a choice. It could also reveal that Jonas may break this choice pattern and try and give someone a choice to chose one thing over another. And that maybe the choice is what gives the characters too much freedom. This passage had a massive impact on what I think about the world because It shows you that the people of this fictional world are not granted the choice of anything. They do not have the choice to wear one thing or another, they see black and white. I can not imagine a world where I do not have the choice to wear a blue sweatshirt over a red one. It seems astonishing to never be able to see color only because one does not wish to give you the chance. If we were not allowed to see color in this world, I could not imagine the outcome. We would all be the same and wouldn’t have different personalities. We wouldn’t be unique. We’d all be the same.

When Jonas is talking about colors and wanting to choose which color clothes he wears, The Giver says, “It is the choosing that is important isn‘t it?” In other words, Jonas has a taste of what life could be and he wants to be able to make choices. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas wants to finally make his own choices and also to show us how the Community is not allowed to make choices. This quote means to me that Jonas wants to be able to make choices himself and not to just keep doing what everyone else wants him to do. I see this idea in the world with the public schooling system or just being a child and eventually growing up. See when you grow up you have to do what people tell you to do, same with school, but eventually, you get to a point where you get to make your own choices, whether they be wrong or right. This quote shows me that Jonas is growing up and becoming his own person. He wants to finally be able to choose things, to see color, to not be the same.

The Giver then replied with the quote.
In other words, some choices can be made on your own, but other must be made by others.
The way the giver says this is concerning. The author is trying to make us see that decisions are very important and making a wrong decision is very likely.
This quote is important because it shows Jonas why the community is so controlling. This quote is also similar to getting a second opinion on something. This story had a significant impact on my thinking about why some people don’t or can’t make decisions.

The Giver is talking to Jonas and says “It’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it?” In other words the giver is saying that it’s important to make your own decisions but in a certain way other people need to make those decisions. Like the perfect community they live in, it needs to stay how it is otherwise it’ll end up like it was when one of the Givers failed their life work and failed the community. He says this with a soft and touching tone, the mood is calm and interested. We either have to except the fact that it was a bad decision or be happy that the decision was made correctly. When they talk, Jonas is a little intrigued to talk about his thoughts with the Giver that he has now experienced. It is important because it explains how we can advocate for our self and make a good decision or bad decision based on the circumstances. Some real world applications are if your friends are forcing you to hang out with them but you need to go to a family gathering or party. The quote explains the importance of making you own decisions and self advocating. This quote changed my thinking to realize that not every decision I make is right, but it always leads me to a good spot. Also, that some decisions are meant to be made from other people and some to be made by you.

In the story Jonas is at the Annex and he is telling the giver about the glimpses of color that he sees around down. He is frustrated that they disappear and that the colors won’t stick for a while. Jonas just wants to see the colors, he wants to be able to choose what color tunic to wear, instead of just the same one everyday. He is realizing that his world is too plain and everyone is the same. Then the Giver says “It’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it?” (98). In other words, the choices we make are not the part that important it is about life. It is the ability to be able to make the choices that is the important part, not the actual thing you choose. The author is trying to make use see that the things that Jonas is talking about aren’t really the things he's frustrated with, he is frustrated because he can’t choose anything. This is because the whole town is the same and there is no variation in anything that happens. The author is revealing that Jonas is beginning to become different than the normal people that live in his community. He is evolving into a more unique person and someone who has an opinion that can be said without it being received in the wrong way by someone. The author wants to give us a sneak peak of the person that Jonas may become after the training is finished with the previous Receiver Of Memory. The quote had a significant impact on my thinking about how bland Jonas’s community is. It was always understood that they had a certain order and expectation of how things would go, but this quote and the context revealed how little choices they have. They don’t see color, they don’t know what many things are, and they don’t make many choices for themselves. This Quote relates to the real world because everyday in our lives we are forced to make many choices, that Jonas does not have. Some people view the choices and inconvenient and don’t want to choose between things they may love or want. This is the opposite of Jonas. If people were brought to a place like where Jonas lives, they would probably reconsider their thoughts about the simple choices they get to make. It would really make them miss the choices we do get to make.

“It’s the choosing that’s important isn’t it” (Lowry 98)? The Giver said to Jonas. In other words, Jonas can wear whatever he chooses as long as he has a reason why. I think the author is trying to make us see that the Giver wants Jonas to know that he can do whatever he wants but choosing what and what not to tell people is the most important thing right now. This quote is important in the real world as well, because with everything we do, we choose why or why not we did this certain thing. This has a significant impact on my thinking about The Giver because I think he is trying to tell Jonas a very important message.

The quote “It’s the choosing that’s important isn’t it?” was said when The Giver and Jonas were talking about colors. The Giver than said that quote to Jonas. In other words, it is the choosing the community makes that is important, but Jonas isn’t seeing it that way. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas wants to start making his decisions in life. Now that The Giver is giving him all of these memories of life before the community made all of the decisions, he starts to act different and wants to be more free and make changes to the way the community is ran. This quote is important because it shows that The Giver starts to realize what Jonas is going through. Jonas want to make a difference though, but he knows he can’t do it alone. Some real world applications and connections that can be drawn is that when you are younger you don’t make most of your choices. As you grow older you make more and more decisions in your lifetime. Jonas sounds like and acts like he wants to start making his own decisions. This quote had a significant impact on my thinking about how Jonas will start to act throughout the book. Jonas is talking to the Giver about seeing colors and how he wants them permanently. It means that you should be able to make your own choices. It reveals that the Giver wants Jonas to choose what he does. To me it means that you can make any choice you want. I see this in the real would as for example you being able to choose what to do at what time, as long as it is not harmful to yourself or others. The Giver says this when Jonas sees colors for the first time. You can choose what you can and can't do. The author is trying to make us see we can do whatever we want.

When the quote is stated Jonas and the Giver are at the Annex in another day of training. As Jonas and him are discussing colors, Jonas shows a bit of defiance and anger over the fact that they don’t get to keep the colors and that he doesn’t have a right to choose. He tries to almost backtrack a bit saying that it’s stupid but the Giver sides with him a bit, saying, “It’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it?” (98 Lowry).

In other words, what you choose or not choose isn’t all that significant. It’s the ability and right to be able to choose is what’s important.
The author is trying to make us see how controlling the authority over this community is. How they are almost stripping everyone of what makes the human, choices, personality, mistakes, etc.
This story had a significant impact on my thinking about how much freedom we have compared to this world. Everyday we’re able to choose how we act, what we wear, what we say, and so much more. The people in Jonas’s community have close to nothing of that.

The author is trying to make us see that not all people get to choose what they want to do with life, and that in the community where Jonas lives in, people make decisions for everyone in the community, from choosing what color clothes to wear, to choosing what job you do and who you are married to. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how in some place people don’t get to make so many choices and may not have as many rights as we do. It may not be as severe as the community that Jonas lives in, but some places may have many restrictions. This makes me feel lucky about how many rights I have, I can choose whatever job I want, or choose what color I want to wear, or do anything whenever I want.

The giver said this because Jonas was saying how he just wants to keep the vision of color and he said that it isn't fair because he wants to make choices like what color tunic he should wear. In other words, Jonas wants to keep the vision of color and he doesn't think that it is fair that people don't have a choice to make. The author is trying to make us see that the town that Jonas lives in is a lot different from the towns that we live in. A real world application could be governments silencing journalism or those who oppose them or North Korean leaders not letting their citizens know what the government is actually like bassically any major censorship could relate to this book cause that is what it is real life censorship.

When Jonas was upset about not being able to see colors, he was trying to explain why he was upset. When he was at a loss for words, the Giver said “It’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it?” (98). In other words, the Giver was saying it’s the opportunity to choose when you live in a community like this that’s important to you, isn’t it? The author is trying to make us see that Jonas is starting to become wiser. The training is affecting his mindset, and how he views the community. Jonas now wants to give everyone a chance to see the beauty and experience the pain. The author is trying to get us to realize Jonas is changing. He is starting to feel separated. Jonas wants to change things. He wants to figure out how to let his community see what he sees. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how Jonas is changing. When the Giver says this, Jonas is realizing what he feels. Before, Jonas didn’t feel the need for choosing. When Jonas finally saw color, he realized that the option of choosing is important. He doesn’t care what the choice is. Since the community is the same, there is little to no choice. Jonas is finally realizing that the community needs to change. I see this in the real world with parents and kids. A lot of times, kids, especially teens do certain things in spite of their parents. They like having the freedom to choose. When kids are young, they like dressing themselves. Even if the outfit doesn’t look appealing at all, they like doing it themselves.

Jonas got angry at the fact that they can’t even choose what color tunic they can wear because of how they took away colors and how the Elders make all decisions for them. He then feels embarrassed and foolish that he even said that, but then the giver says the quote, showing Jonas that he understands where these feelings are coming from. In other words, what you’re actually choosing isn’t actually what’s important. It is the ability to consciously choose for yourself that’s so important. The author is trying to make us see that the community that they are in is so controlling, that it won’t even let them make simple choices. This is taking a toll on Jonas now that he realizes all that he’s missing. This sets a suspenseful mood because we, the readers, know that once Jonas realizes he doesn’t like how controlled the community is, he’ll want to change it. This quote had a significant impact on my thinking about how little we are controlled compared to Jonas’s world. We get to actively make decisions every single day, but Jonas and his community don’t get to feel the joys of freedom and decision making.

“ It's the choosing that's important, isnt it” the giver said.

The Giver was saying this to Jonas when he learned about colors. What is showing that even though it doesn't matter what you do it's what your getting to choose.

This happened the day that he learned about color he first learned about red and then the next day he wished that everyone could see color even though they can't. It means that even though jonas can only see certain colors he wants others to because his feeling of her choosing what you want is always better than being told. It means to me that everyone should have a choice with what they do, And that you shouldn't be told what to do that you should be able to choose with what you want.“ Then he laughed a little” “ i know it's not important, what you wear it doesn't matter but- “ It's the choosing that's important isn't it” the giver asked In other words it matters with what you chose not what your told. The author is trying to make a see that even though other people can't see color because they don't know, that they should have the choice to and jonas thinks that everyone should be able to make their own choices mostly with color because everything is colorless and he wants people to be able to see it and Jonas thinks that we should have our own choices This quote is important because it's about what you chose in life. The real world connection is that everyone makes choices in life and gets to choose what they do mostly.

In the story, Jonas and the giver were talking about choices. The giver said to Jonas “it’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it,” he said this because he wanted to show Jonas he understanding of his frustration. Jonas is frustrated because he wishes that not everything was the same. He knows that what he wears isn’t important but the giver makes a good point. Jonas wants to be able to choose. In other words, the giver means that it’s not about wearing a tunic or getting a toy. Instead he means that it’s about getting the choice to choose. No matter what every person in the community is wearing similar or the same things. But if they got to choose red or blue it would just make things different.
The author is trying to make us see that Jonas is clearly upset and frustrated. Ever since he got these new memories and can now see colors, he is realizing that everything is always the same. No one else in the community can see what he and the giver sees. So, he is frustrated that they will never experience having choices or seeing the colors. This quote is important because it shows how Jonas is different from the community now. Everything changed for him and now he is experiencing all these new things. He likes having memories and seeing colors but now it’s bugging him. This story had a significant impact on my thinking about how different the community is from the world. Today I feel if the world were run all the same there would indeed be some good things but also some bad. I feel that the things we go through are what makes us all unique and for them they are all the same, they don’t experience intense emotions. But, the world would also be much cleaner if we could control plastic and gas and all that stuff.

“It's the choosing that's important isn't it?” - This is a quote from chapter 13 of The Giver. This was said by The Giver to Jonas in a conversation. Jonas was confused why he nor other people can’t choose and make decisions for themselves. This means that in the world that Jonas is living in, things are set in set way so that people can’t make decisions for themselves. This quote is important because it tells us that by simply choosing things that you want could make a difference in someone's life. The author is trying to tell us the conflict that not just Jonas, but other characters in the story have to face. In the real world making decisions is a daily
things for us. In the story it's not the case because their needs to be order in the community. In the text, it talks about how making choices could be dangerous and not safe. After reading this you could see why choosing could be bad, but could it really? Even though Jonas understands this, he still feels like somethings in the community needs to be changed.

This quote happens when Jonas is complaining that now one can make their own choices. Then the giver says “It’s the choosing that's important isn’t it.” In other the giver is trying to comprehend what Jonas is trying to complain about. The author is trying to tell us that in this community people can’t make choices for their own wellbeing. They tell us through the understanding tone through the giver who is trying to comprehend what is happening. The author is trying to tell us that in this community people can’t make choices for their own wellbeing. They tell us through the understanding tone through the giver who is trying to comprehend what is happening. This quote is important because it shows that the people the live around jonas can not make their own decision, and if they do make their own choices then they will be released. This is implicated in the real world because it is telling the fundamental ideas of a communist government. This is saying that when a government is under a communist rule everyone is treated the same and can never think for themselves. This has a significant thinking on how I think about decision making and how at telling one small apart from the others can really help you make big decisions. This is supporting of Jonas knowing his colors now being able to choose and not comprehending that the others in the community can’t tell the difference.

Jonas said “it’s the choosing that’s important isn’t it?” He said this because in his community there is a thing called samness, this is where everyone sees and does the same things and does not get to choose anything. The event that happened in the story when Jonas said this was he was talking to the giver about why he can’t make his own choices and why there is sameness. In other words, this means that The Giver doesn’t really think to choose something over another thing just by color matters. He thinks choosing something just by color doesn’t matter. The author is trying to make us see that The Giver has a lot more wisdom than Jonas does because the Giver knows that choosing something over another thing for color is just silly while Jonas still hasn’t gained all of that wisdom yet from the Giver. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how much wisdom Jonas really has right now. I know that Jonas is going to gain that wisdom slowly and I know that he is still a child but being the Receiver means that Jonas needs that wisdom quickly and right now it seems like Jonas really doesn’t have the wisdom yet. The wisdom that choosing something over another just for color is dumb.

When Jonas is venting about how people in his community can’t make their own choices about things like color, The giver asks “It’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it?” (Lowry 98). The author is trying to make us see that Jonas is beginning to question how things are ran in his community. He’s beginning to experience what everyone else around him besides the giver can’t experience or understand. This quote is showing us that Jonas is going through an internal conflict between what he’s known all his life and the new information he has attained. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how the events in the story are foreshadowing what is about to happen. In the story, you slowly see Jonas start to bend to the temptation of sharing memories with other people. For example, Gabriel can’t sleep soundly unless Jonas gives him pleasant memories of dancing in grass or slow calm rain. This has significance because you see how isolated and lonely Jonas is starting to feel, even among his close friends Asher and Fiona. By giving Gabriel those pleasant memories, I think Jonas is using that as a way to cope with not being able to share his knowledge.

The actual process to getting your specific assignment is the most difficult because it puts The Community at risk for many things, even mistakes, which is scary in The Community. In the story, Jonas says how he has realized that it is a good thing that we don’t pick our own spouses or assignments because it is far too dangerous for the community members. In the story they were talking about something as simple as the clothes you wear and why you have to wear them at specific times. The Giver explains to Jonas that it isn’t the actual clothing and look part of it, but it is the process in which you get the ability to choose or not choose what you wear. This keeps The Community in order, and out of danger. This quote means that, once you accomplish something or get something done, you have to see how you got to that point. It’s not all about the end or understanding what you’ve achieved. It’s about the actual process and steps it took you to get to that point in time. This is a very important thing to learn and gives Jonas more wisdom as he gets older. This reveals that Jonas is gaining more knowledge which is now better preparing him for his years as The Receiver. This quote means that no matter what you achieve, big or small, you have to realize what you did to accomplish what you did. This can go for anything. Understanding the steps you took and how you got to a certain point, will have you learn what to do and how to accomplish more things not only quicker, but also smarter. For example, let's say I wanted to get better at beating my defender off the dribble. I could play more 1v1 and learn more skills, and practice constantly all of the time. Now it’s game time and I’ve got 12 points just by driving the lane and getting away from my defender. In the long term, I scored more and did better, because I practiced and took the steps in order to get there. I understood what it took, and I completed my goal, and will continue to get better. When Jonas was asking about the many specific rules in the community, The Giver told him that it isn’t about the silly seeing rule, or unnecessary rule, it’s about what it means and how the process teaches you.
In other words, The Giver means that it isn’t about the style jacket you're wearing and when you earn it, but it’s about how you earn it through your achievement.
The author is trying to make us see that when you accomplish something, you need to understand how you got there, how long it took you, and the specific steps you took to get there. If you had a certain goal, and ways to achieve it, you may need to work for hours to accomplish your goal. If you don’t know how to get there, you need to rethink what you’re trying to accomplish.
This quote is important because it shows how it is so important to have a goal, and to know exactly how your going to accomplish it. If I want to be a doctor and I say that I need good grades, this is a goal, but it isn’t one that is reachable. I need specific things I need to do. Such as GPA, what college I’m looking at, schooling, money, time, and much more. These things all need to be planned out just to set your goal, these need to be figured out before you even try to achieve your goal. This is why it’s so hard to set long term, extensive goals for yourself. This story has had an impact on my thinking about the importance of understanding what I need to do to accomplish what I want to accomplish. This is so crucial for so many things in life, including at work, even after you retire. These things are so important for making the right choices as much as possible.

In other words the giver is saying that it’s not the choice that matters, it’s feeling of independence when you have made the choice. The author reveals a new side to Jonas that questions the community. This is an important piece of Jonas’ character and may show importance later in the novel.

When Jonas is talking about wanting the ability to choose between a red tunic and a blue one the Giver interrupts him and says “‘It's the choosing that's important isn’t it?” In other words Jonas is talking about how people need a chance to make choices and see how it affects their lives, even small choices like what colored tunic one should wear. Jonas now sees the flaws in his community, how sameness can affect their lives, he wants everyone to have a choice no matter how small or big. The author is trying to make us see that even small decisions are important because we might not always get those choices. This quote had a significant impact on my thinking about our lives now and how everyone feels like they need to follow exactly what everyone does and not making choices for themselves, people need to understand that choices are an important part of our lives since it can change who we are no matter how small the choice.

On page 98 the giver and Jonas both discuss the ability and privilege to make choices and see color. ""I know it's not important, what you wear. It doesn't matter. But-" "It's the choosing that's important, isn't it?" The Giver asked him. Jonas nodded (Lowry, 98)
In other words, Jonas tries to express his feelings on how the community should be able to see colors and make choices for them self, not allowing the chief Elders making the decisions for them. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas is old enough and mature enough to be able to share his feelings. Which is exceptionally different too because he is a boy sharing such intense feelings. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how strict and how unified Jonas's Community is. We are able to make decisions for ourselves in the US (many other countries allowed their own decisions too). Soon enough Jonas will realize that some decisions can negatively impact the community, especially if everyone could see colors too.

The giver said this. The purpose of saying this was to tell Jonas it's important to be able to choose what you do at what time.
This story had a significant impact on my thinking about how Jonas perceives things. I think this quote will make Jonas think differently on what he will be doing in the future.

The giver said this to Jonas to to what he said earlier in this book. They are talking about how it is unfair that people don’t have a choice in many things and how it would be dangerous to let them make their own choices if they choose the wrong thing. This quote means that it doesn’t matter that the subject of choice matters, but it is the actual choice that matters. This reveals in the story that none of them have a choice in anything in the community and that this was their way of living since the start of sameness. What this quote means to me is that no matter what the choice is about, it can still be important. I see this in the world from north Korea where rights are restricted.

The Giver said this on page 98 to Jonas after he gets frustrated when he can't chose anything for himself. In the text Jonas tells The Giver that "I know it's not important, what you wear. It doesn't matter. But-" "It's the choosing that's important, isn't it?" The Giver asked him." Although The Giver and Jonas believe that it is much safer that the community doesn't have any choices for themselves, I bet they could probably agree on that it does get boring after awhile doing the same things over and over and over again.

The giver says this to jonas when they were having an important conversation about choosing and decision making, this happened on page 98 at the beginning of chapter 13
IIts the choice that you make the matters not the topic.
I think the tone and mood would be like a normal conversation tone (Calm) and that the author is trying to make us see that jonas is going to have to make some very complex decisions in the near future.
This quote is important because it reveals that maybe something is going to happen in the future to jonas or the giver. I could see this in the real world, for example if you’re picking out what kind of clothing you want for a special event. You wouldn’t want to pick out regular street clothes, you would want to pick you nice and fancy clothing. This quote had an impact on my thinking about jonas and I was wondering if he was going to get himself into trouble and if it comes down to correct decision making that could end up saving his life if anything bad happens to him.
