Reading comprehension blockage.

UDL framework that address my students' gaps - develop self-assessment and reflection, maximize transfer and generalization, clarify vocab and symbols, syntax and structure, support decoding.

I can incorporate the aspects pointed above, however it will look very differently for each student and grade level I teach. I'll have to focus on the basics of Math and ELA for some, and decoding the complexity of the same subject for others a bit more advanced.

Prior to incorporating the frameworks I'll need to reassess the students' when they return, and first work on recruiting interest again, focusing on optimizing relevance, value, and authenticity... focusing on starting confidence and coping build up; then, introduce the framework for academic concepts....

1. The learning gaps with my students are mostly when it comes to reading, vocabulary, and comprehension. They can read verbally fluently for the most part, but they do not understand what they are reading. I realized a few years ago that they don't visualize anything that they are reading, so I want to work more on the visualization of text this year. My students have a learning gap when it comes to making connections and information processing.
2. Providing multiple means of representation in UDL addresses my students' gaps, and that's where I want to focus this year. I want to provide more options for comprehension and approach reading comprehension in a different way from just reading and answering questions. I also want to provide options for perception.
3. I'm going to incorporate providing more options in my classroom when it comes to text choices, interpreting text choices, and presenting their understanding of the texts. I'd like to have longer projects with more choices so that students can choose something they find more relevant and able to interpret and show their understanding of.
4. I definitely want to work on larger projects with more choice and flipped learning so that I can help them with their work and understanding in school, while they learn at home. Ultimately they will have choices in how to present their learning, but then all have to take the same test afterwards in order to prepare them for the FSA, which is a standardized test.

I need to start with students feeling safe and interested (recruiting interest) and then I will move through the framework as I can!

3. The students do not have much difficulty with being interested/engaged in the content, but expanding their knowledge beyond the basic content is the most challenging.
2. The aspects of the UDL framework that addresses my students' learning gaps mostly falls into the representation portion. This mostly applies to the "provide multiple means of representation" portion specifically the highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships portion and guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation.
3/4. The aspects of the UDL framework that I can incorporate would be to maximize on the students' engagement and make it a point to highlight patterns obviously with guided practice and modeling how to identify patterns in the material and encouraging students to locate patterns and make connections with the information by incorporating their interests.

1. Learning gaps for my students exist in Key Ideas and Details, mostly. Students have gaps in good reading practices, so to close those gaps, we will have to practice reading strategies. My AP students have gaps in rhetorical analysis and in analyzing 19th century texts.
2. A little bit of everything, honestly. I feel that I hit a lot of them over the course of a lesson, but I need to be more explicit in my planning with them so that I can help the students close gaps. And, in a discussion of identifying and closing gaps, it is important to acknowledge that teachers have gaps here, too--not everyone was trained the same way to be in the classroom.
3. I will work on explicitly implementing Action & Expression UDL means--If I can get students working as hard as I do, we can have shared accountability for our progress in the classroom.
4. Explicitly planning with it in mind--making connections to each part of the Learning-Focused LP.

Aspects of the UDL framework that address my students gaps are mainly the steps within the Engagement column. These bullets point out a need for creating and reaching "objectives" as well as "optimiz(ing) relevance, value and authenticity."
3. We can incorporate pretty much all aspects of the UDL framework because each strategy can be applied to specific lesson plans.
4. We will incorporate the framework by using it as a reference tool to help better plan instruction within our classrooms. This will be most useful after an attempt at teaching a concept > it can help to fill the gaps or flaws in the instruction so we can better teach students who struggle with the subject matter.
