I think it’s beautiful how cumulative their culture is, the way that traditions are embraced and shared with younger generations so they can carry on and understand the rich history behind traditions. The community emphasis was also beautiful to watch as they all prepared to welcome this young girl into her transition into womanhood which they deeply value and celebrate.

The flower dance is seen as embodying strength and empowering. It is tied to history and is a ceremony marking womenhood for native girls after they get their first period. Blinded for four days and reflecting on inner self- remove blindfold and are revealed as new self. There is a lot that goes into this process such as fasting for three and a half days prior. It is a family oriented ceremony and everyone is involved in the process from cutting down wood to preparing to make food weeks in advance. It was a very emotional process overall and seeing the love and care that goes into it from the family is heartwarming.

And thinking about how some of these women were unable to connect to their culture for a time is just so sad and it’s exciting now that young women are able to start practicing their heritage again.

It is a beautiful ceremony and dance that I believe brings confidence to the ladies that go through the flower dance. It is wonderful that all the family members gather to celebrate, not just the women. What really stood out was the father saying that his co-worker thought it was cool how his daughter was able to call him and talk about her first period because it is not typically common for men or society in general to discuss the coming of age moment.
