Cherry is more extroverted, she is not afraid to speak her mind. On page 21 she wasn't intimidated by Dally and said "Take your feet of my chair and shut your trap." She is confident and was able to stay calm on page 41 when Bob and Randy showed up in the Mustang. For openness on the personality quiz, she got 72.5%. On page 38, she reveals the true difference that made Greasers, Greasers, and Socs, Socs to Ponyboy. " I don't know why I could talk to her; maybe for the same reason she could talk to me" (29). Not only can she open up to other people, she got Ponyboy to tell her about his life and his brothers. She was also able to open up and talk to Ponyboy about how they shared their love for sunsets. According to the test, she is labeled as the Diplomat, which is fitting because she worked and communicated with both the Socs and the Greasers. Cherry has many parts to her personality that makes her an interesting character.

Cherry wants to be a peacemaker between the two groups. Even after Bob's death she doesn't want the Socs and Greasers against each other. Bob revealed to Ponyboy and Johnny, "She said she felt that the whole mess was her fault, which it is, and that she'd keep up with what was comin' off with the Socs in the rumble and would testify that the Socs were drunk and looking for a fight and that you fought back in self-defense" (E73). Cherry also has two different personalities. She can be the confident Soc who told Dally off. Or she can be "Cherry the dreamer who watched sunsets and couldn't stand fights. It was hard to believe a Soc would help us, even a Soc that dug sunsets" (E73). Ponyboy had described her as a dreamer, even after seeing how she reacted to Dally. Her two different sides of her personality allows her to try and be a peacemaker between the two groups.

One of Cherry's strengths include being brave. Once again at the movie theater on page 22 she says to Dally "You'd better leave us alone. Or I'll call the cops". She is not afraid to speak up for herself against Dally. Another strength that Cherry has, is her ability to see good in all people. "He could be sweet sometimes, and friendly. But when he got drunk... (128). She still loved Bob even though he was a different person when he was drunk. She also didn't completely reject Ponyboy at first sight, when they were at the movie theater. That also reflects how she can see good in everyone and her kindness and openmindedness. Her sense of loyalty is shown when she acts as a spy for Greasers. Even though she is labeled as a Soc, she still works with the Greasers and testifies in front of the court for Ponyboy on the electronic version, page 143.

Cherry has many strengths, but she also has some flaws. Her confidence can be a good thing, until it veers into being more hotheaded. Even though she had the confidence to stand up to Dally at the theater, it my come off as hotheaded, in the way she was snappish by saying, "I wouldn't drink it if I was starving in the desert. Get lost, hood". Another weakness that Cherry has, is that she takes too much of the blame. According to Dally on the electronic version, page 73, "She said she felt that the whole mess was her fault". She blames herself for being there when Randy and Bob showed up after the movie, later leading to Bob's death and Ponyboy and Johnny having to run.

Type of Character

Cherry is considered a protagonist. "Hey, I didn't tell you we got us a spy. That good-lookin' broad I tried to pick up that night you killed the Soc. The redhead, Cherry what's-her-name" (E72). She acts as a spy for the Greasers and Ponyboy, even though she is a Soc. She even testifies for Ponyboy and Johnny on page E143, proving that Johnny had only acted in self defense.

I think Cherry is a dynamic character. Her views of Greasers change, after meeting and talking to Ponyboy. On E33, she explains to Ponyboy the true difference between Greasers and Socs. "She was coming through to me all right, probably because I was a greaser, and younger; she didn't have to keep her guard up with me. Something else that happened, that labels her as a dynamic character, is that she reveals that, "I could fall in love with Dallas Winston... I hope I never see him again, or I will" (E40). She admits that she could fall in love with Dally, even after their first encounter where he was acting quite rudely to her.

Being a dynamic character, usually indicates them as also a round character, which I believe also applies to Cherry. Using the same example from E40, she gets quite fired up at Dally for his behavior at the movie. Even though she didn't initially like Dally, she reveals to Ponyboy that she could fall in love with Dally. Another conflict that Cherry has in her personality that makes her a round character, is that she is a Soc and she ends up being a spy for the Greasers.

Foreshadowing

Foreshadowing is used in the book, to hint at future events. The author uses it to pull in the audience, and sort of prepare them for what is about to happen. One of the times that foreshadowing was used, was when the church burned. “We were careful with our cigarettes-if that old church ever caught fire, there’d be no stopping it” (79). Ponyboys, Johnny, and Dally returned to the church to find it buring, which is also quite ironic. Another example of when foreshadowing was used, was when the Mustang pulled up at the park with Johnny and Ponyboy. “The blue Mustang was circling the park slowly” (54). We knew that was Bob, and we knew that it was Bob who had beat up Johnny. Ponyboy ended up being thrown in the fountain, and Johnny ends up killing Bob. These are examples of when foreshadowing, was used.

Conflict

The conflict in the Outsiders is a mix between person vs. person, and person vs. society. There is of course the conflict between the Greasers and, and Socs. Person vs. person is shown in the park when “They ran when I stabbed him” (57). When the Socs showed up at the park and Johnny stabbed Bob, it was an example of person vs. person. Person vs. society is also used in the book. Dally said "You sure you want to go back? Us greasers get it worse than anyone else" (75). There is a clear divide between Greasers and Socs. There is a stereotype on what Socs are like, and what Greasers are like. Throughout the book we learn that doesn’t entirely apply to all the characters. For example, we learn how Cherry is different, in being a dreamer. Both these types of conflict, is used in the book.
