Module 2 Learning Activity by EUN Partnership aisbl

Has using the rubric made you change your mind about whether the activities you wrote about in module 1 represent low/high levels of student collaboration? Explain why this is, or is not the case in your Learning Diary and in the Padlet below. In your Learning Diary, and in the Padlet below explain what is useful about the rubric and how has it helped you understand collaborative learning better, and how you intend to use it in the future.

I am happy to see that many of my activities involve collaboration in a way described in the videos. Though I should work more on the fact that some students just tend to sit back and wait for the others to do their work instead. I guess this might be slightly more difficult in vocational school though I am sure a topic appealing to their everyday lives would make the sts more engaged.

The rubric is an amazingly useful and helpful tool for understanding and evaluating collaborative learning. It changed my perspective. Before using it, I obviously had quite different criteria and opinion of what collaborative learning is, since I now realize that what I considered a low level collaborative activity turned out to be a code 5.
Thank you for introducing the rubric, it makes everything so simpler and understandable. It will become an inevitable tool in my future work.
https://padlet.com/spa_neshko/u5dln8tyojif

Activity 1. Analysis and investigation on waste recycling with the realization of multimedial products (ppt or prezi presentation) each related to recycling of a specific type of material. In this activity students firstly have to analyse the characteristics of a specific type of material and its recycling and possible reuse (the argument has been also treated in class); then they have to share what they learned with their classmates creating a multimedial presentation explaining and describing all the aspects above.

Activity 2. Analysis and examination of original second world war’s documents with the realization of oral exposition describing materials analysed. For this activity each group, first of all, have to select some of the documents made available by teachers. Then, they have to analyse the material trying to find out all the historical information (both explicit and implied one). Finally they have to organise and then realize a brief oral presentation about them.

Rubric is useful and it helped me to assess collaborative learning level better. Using the rubric has not made change my mind on the collaborative level of two activities described in module 1.

According to the rubric, in my opinion, the first activity I proposed to my students is a code 3, while the second one is a code 5.

The first activity required just a bit lower level of collaboration from students than the second one because the argument of investigation is familiar to students and they already have a knowhow about this. Moreover, in the second activty an high level of collaboration is required just in the first step in which they have to reach a shared selection of documents. Each student should make his knowledge, abilities and skills available to teammates thus suggesting the better documents to choose and analyse. All the phases of the activity, in particular the realisation of the final product (oral presentation) required students interdependent working.

The example I gave in module 1- a group goes on holiday, where they have a budget to spend on their trip, they must make substantive decisions and decide what to tell about the trip, with a presentation that included role-playing situations created by them, that would be a code 5, I guess.
When I ask them to discuss a situation or comment on a picture in pairs, I think there might be some shared responsibility but not substantive decisions, that might be a code 3.
https://padlet.com/saolsilva/21d36cprxnwo

Vocabulary bingo is an activity which students love and it is perfect to review vocabulary. The teacher gives a list of words and gives to students a blank Bingo card and they must write in it for example only 5 words. The teacher calls out the definition not just the word and keeps track of the words he uses each time to verify the winner. This type of activity is CODE 2 because students ٠DO work together · BUT they DO NOT have shared responsibility.

The other activity I proposed that is a different Shakespearian work for each group.

Each group was formed by 4 or 5 students, depending on the total number of students in the class.

After receiving teacher’s general advice, they developed their work by themselves, searching information on books or online. Every student of each group had a precise task. The collaboration was more evident when they put together the information they found to build up the Power Point to show and discuss their work in front of the class. This activity in my opinion is CODE 5 because students · DO have shared responsibility · AND they DO make substantive decisions together about the content, process, or product of their work · AND their work is interdependent.

Here is the link of My Learning Diary:
https://padlet.com/daria_roni/dlv70y1jhwal

Activity 1 (high level of collaboration): Build a presentation on a foreign Country in Europe or in the world: CODE 5 Students work together to realize the presentation of a foreign Country. They share responsibility because the final product is unique and they are all responsible for that. As a teacher I consider also the final product to assess students. The decisions they make can be substantive both on the product (e.g. in which order do we present the information required? what kind of product do we make?) and the process (e.g. who is in charge of what? what are the time and space limits?), sometimes also on the content (e.g. including or not a specific aspect of the culture or curiosities). They work interdependently because the contribution of every student is important in order to get the final product (powerpoint presentation or hardpaper panel) and the final product isn't just a patchwork or collage of every contribution. There is a unique vision and project of it.

Activity 2 (low level of collaboration): Revision of the knoledge of a topic or particular abilities in order to prepare for a test: CODE 2 Students work together resuming a topic, they should share responsibility for building up a summarizing scheme, but mostly this doesn't happen and a student lead the activity.

Has using the rubric made you change your mind about whether the activities you wrote about in module 1 represent low/high levels of student collaboration? What is useful about the rubric and how has it helped you understand collaborative learning better, and how you intend to use it in the future.
I think that using the rubric I got a similar result: a code 2 for low level of student collaboration and a code 5 for a high level one. In general, a rubric can be useful because it forces you to reflect on the activities, in order to plan them better and to really improve students' collaboration skills. Since I enrolled to work on collaborative teaching and learning, I have to use more this rubric and I ask myself or my colleagues these questions.

Activity 1 (high collab) - Create a poster on a certain aspects of Ancient Greek's social life in form and present it to your classmates in form of a video. - As the students had to work on individual points of their aspects on their own, the students were not working together all the time, but all the other 3 aspects of the rubric were adressed.
Activity 2 (low collab) The students wrote texts about their appearance in English. The texts and a class picture were then sent to a class in France. The French did the same. In a later lesson the students read the texts they received and tried to find out who was who according to the text they read. - This project stops at rubric 1, as this whole project was not product oriented and the students therefore did not have to engage, take responsibility and make substantial decisions.

One thing I came up with, while evaluating my project was that I am not sure whether the stages cannot be interchanged. A collab activity might have interdependency, but the students might not be making any substantial decisions if there is no product they are working on.

High level of collaboration: I think the code for this activity is 5. Students had to create a radio programme called “5 minutes with James Joyce” by my last year students. The students worked in groups and each group had to write a script about a topic related to Joyce’s life and works that we had studied together in class. Then they had to record it..Students had to work in groups and each student had shared responsibility since they had to develop a common product. Students had also to make substantive decisions together: they had to agree on the format of the programme and on its content. Finally their work was absolutely interdependent since each one had a determined role but their part was dependent from the others'.
Low level of collaboration: I would give a code 2 to this activity. Students had to write a presentation of their town, school, province highlights for their etwinning partners. Students were divided into groups but they could work on their part separately and one student could do the task for the other members of the group. They had shared responsibility for the final product but they didn'y have to take any substantial decision since the teacher gave them very detailed instruction about websites to consult and the final lay-out.

In a two-step test, students complete the exam individually and open one at a time and then work in small groups to answer questions again. In the second stage, the room attendant is filled with an effective and powerful discussion with almost every student. This provides prompt targeted feedback from students' interviews with their peers. We also see the use of this test format not only to ensure consistency among interactive component components, but also to show how students are approaching other common course components. This is accomplished without losing the summary evaluation of individual performance, which is the anticipation of exams for most trainers.
code 5

My first activity was a role playing activity in which the two students involved had to role play a conversation based on a poster giving the rules that applied to a public place. I thought it was a low level of collaboration because there was no research involved since I had given them all the information they needed. After reading the rubric I am of a different mind.
They were working in pairs, they had shared responsibility because they had to contribute to create a meaningful conversation, they had to make substantive decisions because they had to choose the grammar, the vocabulary, the setting of the conversation and they were interdependent, so it was a code 5.
The second activity was a webquest and each group of students had to find information, choose the relevant pieces of information for the project and make a presentation to the other groups. Each member of the group had to present part of the final product. So, they had worked together, shared responsibility and made decisions, they were certainly interdependent and I think it was a code 5.

Low collaboration: "Design a poster that presents the differences between man and animal." When you apply the rubric you will see that it may come to Code 2 only, since there is no high degree of interdependent work, substantive decisions are missing. Yet the activity is only on a small scale, the learning process will continue and the example given cannot really be applied to the rubric in total. This also means that the collaboration envisaged by the rubric is much more complex, requires a long-term scenario.
Present a job of your choice in its development from the past to the present and its potential change in the future by creating an ebook with your eTwinning partners.
This collaboration amounts to maybe code 4, since pupils became autonomous shapers of their learning process and resolved an important issue, they traced the changes in the labour market with interdependent work in an international team. They mirrored in their activity the real working world. Individual accountability as well as group accountability was provided for.
https://padlet.com/v1b1/d11vj3lr898q

To use the coding from Deirdres rubric I would assess my low level of collaboration as code 2. They did work in groups and have a shared responsibility in their decision.

The first activity, which implies a high degree of collaboration, consisted, in the first phase, of surveying students' curiosities. Subsequently, small working groups were set up to explore the question "Which endangered animals are there in Madeira?". The final product would be the compilation of a book. The students wrote informative texts and reviewed their work. For this, it was important the feedback given by the students and teacher through Google Drive. The final works were presented to colleagues from other classes. Although I still have some gaps, I assign code 5. The second activity that implies a low degree of collaboration consists in the presentation of a subject and subsequent realization of practical exercises using the new technologies. In an online platform students would individually respond to a set of questions to test knowledge. This is a code 1 activity.
https://padlet.com/taniaserraogomes/pj4kxfq3076g

High level of collaboration – To study a realistic novel from the XIX century, students were divided in 5 groups (5 elements each). They previously knew the objectives, the timeline, which contents to approach – different for each group - and evaluation criteria. They were free to plan the methodology during the process, including the way to present the final product (prezi, powerpoint, drama, videos,…). I would include this collaborative work in level 4 (Students DO have shared responsibility; they DO make substantive decisions together about the content, process, or product of their work; BUT their work is not interdependent). About the last topic, students tend to follow the natural leaders and it’s difficult to make sure they all have their input in the whole process.

Low level of collaboration - grammar exercises to solve in Pair work – I would put it in level 2, because it is a very strict and oriented work, focussed on a specific content and not in a complete learning process.

Has using the rubric I change a little bit my mind about the levels I gave of student collaboration in the activities I wrote about in module 1.

In the first activity (“when I ask them to jointly work out a multiple-choice questionnaire”) they only work together in pairs or groups to accomplish the task, but they have to discuss between them the answers and, according to the rubric, they have to share responsibility for the choices they make: “Share responsibility is more than simply helping each other: students must collectively own the work and be mutually responsible for its outcome. So, in this activity, students do have shared responsibility, but they are not required to make substantive decisions together.

About the second activity (“I think writing in pairs with colleagues from another European country articles on their customs, traditions, habits, tastes, etc., to publish in a online magazine”) I still think that requires high level of collaboration, taking into account that requires greater negotiation, mutual understanding, leading to more complex collaboration to achieve a specific common object. So, according the rubric, in this activity students: worked in groups that included people from outside the classroom, and they worked together by using technology to share ideas or resources (google docs); students have shared responsibility because the students and the outside participants were mutually responsible for the outcome of the work; students have make substantive decisions together when they resolved important issues that guided their work together and used their knowledge of an issue to take a stance on a topic they have written about; students’ work was interdependent when all students have participated in order for the team success, they all have participated, negotiated and agreed on the process, design, and conclusions of their work.

After doing this analysis, and knowing better the rubric, I realized that they made me understand collaborative learning much better, and now I see that sometimes the learning activities I have planned were just a simple kind of group work in a low level of collaboration. The rubric will be useful and will help me planning much better my next collaborative learning scenarios.

Perhaps sometimes my evaluation of each element of the group work was very superficial. In the first activity I told about etwinning project, and there I think students work in group, share responsibility, make substantive decisions together, and work interdependently so I would give a Code 5. On the contrary, the other activity, work in pair to solve a Math problem, but students not always share responsibility for the result, so I would give a Code 2.
This rubric made me think, and I hope I can put it in practice this school year because I have two 7th grade classes with "Autonomy and curricular flexibility" that is a new project that began this school year at Portugal.

My earning Diary (with comments on the posts of three other participants):

https://padlet.com/zulmiramag/nkoccss0iygz

Activity 1 (high level of collaboration) – Code 4

The activity was designed for a Comenius project we took part in a few years ago. The students worked together in groups of mixed nationalities and the language of communication was English. Learners used ICT to communicate (the Twinspace, emails and social networks). They had shared responsibility because each group had to produce something (a logo for the project, a presentation, a short video, an audio file, etc.). The students were relatively free to choose the “process” of their work. On the contrary, the content was usually proposed by the international teachers. Students had to make a few substantive decisions, even though most of the activity was guided and monitored by the teachers. I find it difficult to say whether the students’ work was interdependent. I suspect some students worked harder than others and it was difficult to monitor such a heterogeneous group with students living in different countries.

Activity 2 (low level of collaboration) – Code 2

The whole class read a simplified version of Alices’s Adventures in Wonderland during their summer holiday. At the beginning of the school year, we studied how to write a good review. The students worked together in pairs and analysed a series of reviews trying to discuss and identify the structure of a good review and its main characteristics. The students were then asked to work together and write detailed instructions on what a good review should contain and what it should be like. Each student was then asked to write a review for the book and to publish it on a Padlet I had previously prepared.

Finally, I formed different pairs and asked the students to read each other's reviews and do an exercise of "peer evaluation" assessing their schoolmates' work and giving useful advice on how to improve each other's work. I am uncertain about the code here. I think it is probably code 2. Professor Butler says that reading each other’s work and giving feedback does not count as “shared responsibility”. Now that I think of it, I have a question. What if my activity had contemplated “making substantive decisions together”? If step 2 is missing, is the activity always code 2?

https://padlet.com/c_sollazzo/xgf0cgsxel9o

Giuliana . SpainLEARNING ACTIVITY 1 PROJECT: NATURE READING ROMANTIC POETS AND FIND CONNECTIONS WITH OUR LIVESSTUDENTS’ AGE: 15 SUBJECT: ENGLISH LITERATUREAfter reading together, in class, romantic English poets and analyzed themes, rhetorical figures and background, my students had two different tasks to accomplish. They had to prepare a questionnaire for people running outdoor activities or simply maintaining parks in their town, and then interview them. The aim of the questionnaire and the interview was to collect information on strengths and flaws in the organization of outdoor activities and propose solutions, improvements. After the interview, they had to write a proposal to hand to me and then prepare a presentation to the other groups for them to know which activity they had picked (characteristics, locations etc) , what they had found out and what they proposed. They worked in class and at home. This project needed a high level of collaboration because they had to prepare their material and then implement it. The proposals needed sharing, decision making and individual work for the part of the presentation they had to do.The students enjoyed the activity and it was a good opportunity for them to explore what their town had to offer and how they could help them.PROJECT : IRELAND THROUGH HISTORYSTUDENTS’ AGE: 16 SUBJECT: ENGLISH LITERATUREWhile reading “Angela’s Ashes” by Frank McCourt my students had to prepare presentations to give and learn information on the historical background, themes and important facts related to the book and the writer himself. We read and analyzed the novel together in class, discussed themes and characters and the students were asked to research and present the topics proposed. After deciding which part each one was in charge of, they made their own research and assembled the information to present it to the class. The project required a low level of collaboration since they could work autonomously to prepare their own part and then join the parts later on. The oral presentation requires agreement and organization, though

Students will explain whether natural disasters are weather-related or geology-related. Next, they’ll research a self-selected or teacher-selected natural disaster using BrainPOP resources, and complete a graphic organizer explaining the cause/effect relationships behind the selected disaster

LEARNING ACTIVITY :

-            ( sharing ideas )  : Share teacher and student experiences of exhibitions. Decide on the theme to be explored (e.g. Nature, Science ) Decide on the student groupings (suggest groups of 3) and the roles within the groups. Decide on the format that the science work  will be presented in;

-          ( structuring thoughts ) :   students decide in groups of 3 the mode of artistic presentation (e.g painting, digital, photography etc, and they create a storyboard of natural disasters;

-          ( free discussion ) :  give students a copy of the Activity page . Have them guess the name of each natural disaster pictured and write their answers. Provide several minutes for them to complete the 'Think About It' section and then facilitate a class discussion on student responses, tying recent natural disasters to the dialogue. Play again the movie for the class. Pause as needed for discussion and for students to fill in their activity sheet;

-          ( investigation ) : ask students to suggest other ways to categorize the different disasters ( What , When ; Why );

-          ( collaboration ) GROUP ACTIVITY ( high level of collaboration ) : students research and record informations, prepare material to share with other students, they work on cards, puzzles, games and they partecipate in cooperative group activities;

-          (developing or  practising)  : Students , in pair or in group, create a poster on natural disasters;  students reflect on how best to proceed to the final presentation;

COLLABORATION : agree the groups and the roles within the groups; share findings within their subject area in real time and virtually; students collaborate in collating all feedback to support the work of the final phase; students collaborate to complete the final products.

ASSESSMENT : Teacher will offer feedback to group members based on observation; students seek feedback from other peers; teacher will offer feedback on the final artefacts; students will seek peer feedback on the same; teacher will offer advice on what steps to take for the next phase; teacher assessment based on observation of the level of collaborative activity and the development in collaborative skills.

I've thought about it, I've re-read what I had written about my activities and I've watched again the video about the 4 big qustions. This is what I think.
Activity 1, that I had said had a high level of interaction. I think I can confirm it even if it was a very simple and basic acitivity:
- did the students have to work in pairs or groups? Yes, they were divided into groups of 4 people.
- did they have shared responsibility? Yes, if someone hadn't worked properly the whole result would have been worse.
- did they make substantive decision together? Yes, they had to choose which were the most important topic to put in their map, how to do the map, which pictures to include in the poster and how to divide the topics for the speaking part.
- was their work interdependent? Well...maybe non properly...
So for this activity I think I would write CODE 4.
As for the other activity: same questions, different answers:
- did they work in pairs or groups? Yes, they worked in pairs.
- did they have shared responsibility? In theory, yes, they had to be sure that their partner had really undestood the grammar rule.
- did they have to make substantive decision? Not at all...so this line stops here. The CODE, for this Activitiy, seems to be 3, even if it seems to me too similar to the previous...

Brainstorming-The pupils were called to face a common task, each proposed their own ideas.
The juncture between the students took place in the fullest of the cooperation and not just in the collaboration.

Activity 2
After launching a challenge to the kids, there was a home-based search work in small groups.
At school, their considerations were presented.
I provided other materials and instructions, groups prepared conceptual maps, billboards, power points.
They have managed to manage their role within the group, there has been a positive interdependence.
Everyone felt responsible for the results of the whole group.

Last year together, I learned the crafts. I invited my parents and everyone presented their profession / profession. Was awesome.

Then follow the collaboration with the preschool class. Together we teach lessons, most of the time. They have symbolic themes: ex. for next week's work we need fruit and vegetables. So everyone will bring fruits and vegetables that we will describe together.

The latest collaboration is in projects with other teachers: eTwinning, or local projects. We organize joint visits and activities. We came in contact through skype and work on the 'healthy food'. It was a 4 level I think, bacause students were involved, worked hard in group to show how Italian food, based on Mediterranean diet, means. They show dishes, products, create a typical weekly diet and supported they opinion through real data. they shared responsabilities, making decisions, giving and showing evidence of their work. I experinced a 1 level when I tryed to work on a subject, an historical one, without LIM in school

I mentioned a “Cell model” in 1st module and I am dipping into this activity by comparing to rubric. Students worked in groups, every group has four students. They shared responsibility because they helped each other and they were mutually responsible for their product. They made substantive decisions together. Because they used organelle and cell knowledge to make a decision about their cell model. They planned what they will do, when to do it, what tools they will use and shared responsibility for the materials. They worked interdependent because they decided to model organelles with materials and they shared the responsibility about to make them. Totally we got 5 from decision steps. I think that activity is not real world problem and it does not require a main problem solving process. Use of ICT tools; they das opportunity to use internet from my computer and they had to use their knowledge and constructing it by modelling but they were not designer an ICT product. We got 4 from Use of ICT tools. For the self-regulation; they had learning goals because one of them said “I could understand better with our cell model”, they planned their model before production and I gave them feedback to improve their work.

In the activity I described earlier it depends on the choice my students make on how to plan their work. Some students work in groups. They work at the same tasks and share responsibilty. Obviously their level of collaboration is high. Other students work alone at their chosen task. But that doesn't mean they don't collaborate. I urge my students to help each other. Some students are very good in making a Powerpoint presentation, others are masters in making a website, are real sleuthhounds on the internet, are very good in spelling or writing and so on. I stimulate every one to make use of their talents and to help each other. The level of collaboration of every student is different but I'm very pleased with ten atmosphere in my class. That is far more important to me than making sure every student has written down everything in a schedule. That's my main problem with administrative tasks like the template that is used in this course. It's useful to reflect on what you have accomplished, but writing everything down in detail seems to me a bit to far fetched. The result of the work and the level of satisfaction students get of learning is far more important than the administration of the task.

first activity:
this title is mostly about in-class work. students often distinguish between groups during course work. our classes do not exceed 34 people. so I do my study by separating 5 and 6 groups. In the creation of groups, sometimes students are released. sometimes I am randomly placed. After creating a group list, I make a distribution of the topics, and I make a president determination. groups work on the topic during the course. sometimes I want them to finish the work the next week. so that they can work together outside the classroom.(code-3) because the sharing of responsibilities is not fully realized. some students were active, others were passive.
second activity:
this includes more out-of-school work. classify students into smaller groups. presenting the topic title or headings of the project that I have previously determined. give them time to do it after the subject distribution is done. this time is usually not less than a month. as well as distributing the rubrics to all groups, in which notes to be noted are written when making the evaluation. I interview students during certain periods and follow the process.(code-4) because there was no complete cooperation between students outside the school.

Applying Learning Activity Rubrics to the activities I presented in the 1st module, I came to the conclusion that it falls under code 4 and 2.
Ativity 1
The class was divided into 5 groups of 4/5 students. After reading an anthology of short stories, each group chose one of the short stories, recounted it and illustrated it. Each group had to write only one text and one illustration, this required a great level of collaboration. Thus, 5 retellings were presented to the community.
CODE 4 - Students do have shared responsibility, they do not make decisions about the content, process or product of their work BUT their work is not interdependent

Ativity 2
To review History contents, each group of students was assigned a sub-theme. Each group elaborated 4 questions, with 4 hypotheses of answer, being only one and one representative image. The questions were organized in a game using the kahoot tool and the students had fun playing. In some groups the participation of the group members was not equitable and in other cases, each student in the group elaborated a question. The students had fun playing and enjoyed the activity but found the level of collaboration low.
Are students required to work in pairs or groups? -YES
2- Do students share responsibility?
CODE 2 - Students do work together, BUT they do not have shared responsibility

· Are the students required to work in pairs or groups?

· Do they have shared responsibility?

· Do they make substantive decisions?

· Is their work interdependent?

1 -

The activity that required a low level of collaboration I mentioned in Module 1 was making a mind map. The students worked in small groups (3 students) and shared responsibilities in preparing the map. They jotted down the words that came to their mind related to the topic together and then one student was in charge of looking for the pictures and the other two prepared the captions. The captions were then edited by all the members of the group and the final layout of the map was decided.

I may say that the second point (shared responsibility 2) was the most difficult to accomplish. Not in all groups the members gave their contribution as expected; in one group some students exploited their mates’ work and in two groups some students had to be reminded frequently what they had been asked to do. Two groups managed to make the final product as required.

2 –

This task was quite demanding. The students worked in pairs and wrote down the recipe of a local dish in L2. The whole class selected the best ones and then in groups of five they edited them and prepared the script for a video (responsibilities were shared). They decided to record the video in the kitchen lab to show the preparation of the dishes. One / two students from each group were chosen by the students to explain the recipes. A student recorded the activity and a video for each recipe was made by each group. The recipes and the videos were uploaded on an ebook. The ebook was made in cooperation with mates from other European schools.

This activity was engaging. The students showed enthusiasm above all when they had to prepare the videos. All students worked willingly even the less motivated ones, they worked in pairs and in groups, they shared responsibilities (though some had to be monitored and stimulated), they made decisions, and their work was interdependent. It was not easy to get to the end, the learning path was not smooth, but in the end the students were satisfied with their work, which doesn’t often happen in less involving lessons.

After, they watched the video “ The life cycle of a plant” , discussed about the topic and drew a picture of the life cycle of a plant in their journals , writing some information about it. Students were also provided with some captivating websites where to find useful information about their topic.

https://www.turtlediary.com/video/plant-parts-and-their-function.html

http://extension.illinois.edu/gpe/case1/c1facts2a.html

In a second phase they can create an Anchor Chart to recall information learned from the lesson before. But the most exciting activity is Voice Thread, an interactive tool that allows users to add immages and audio and share information around media. So the students can create their voice thread and learn how to add comments.

https://voicethread.com/share/5828489/

As homework they talk to their parents about the importance of the plants and ask them about different ways that people use plants. The day after, the students share and compare answers. So they found out what role each character plays , what type of character it is or how it helps Alice or frightens her.

Then they wrote their information about the scenes they had liked much more, drew the cover of their book and printed and coloured pictures of the main characters.

Students were provided of a variety of tasks , taking into account the learning purpose and learner styles and preferences.

After reading the graded reader book, the students were inspired to make their storybooks, which they wrote and illustrated.

In addition, divided in small groups they realized a Power Point presentation : a group wrote the text, a second group searched animated immages and a third one searched the music. The teacher provided materials and a computer with an Internet connection so that they could add cultural facts, pictures and research information.

First activity- CODE 5

SCIENCE- Life Cycle and Part Function

I talked to my students about the story “The tiny seed” and discuss the big ideas, providing them some key vocabulary words.

Finally they create another Anchor Chart for plant parts and functions and reflect on how the lesson went and how the use of technological tools have helped them to have a better understanding of the lesson.

Second Activity-
A CLIL lesson on Alice in Wonderland- CODE 5

In the first phase of warming up , I have showed my students, of 11/12 years old, a spidegram to introduce the key words and the main characters on a Padlet and let them talk about what do they had already known about the story. In this introductory lesson students used all four skills and worked individually and with partners. Before watching the Disney video, I explained to them that the Disney version of “Alice in Wonderland” is based on the children’s book by the English author Lewis Carroll called “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”.

After watching the video, students worked in group of 3/4 to find out the main features of the characters that Alice encounters in Wonderland. So they found out what role each character played , what type of character it was or how it helped Alice or frightened her.

In addition, divided in small groups they also realized a Power Point presentation : a group wrote the text, a second group searched animated immages and a third one searched the music. This experience was extremely positive for students and for teacher.

https://padlet.com/nicolina_graziano/y0zfvpziuff6

The questions game is low level of collaboration as it only reached a code 3. Students worked together and had shared responsibility, but didn't make substantive decisions.
Whereas, the Arthur and the Round Table project reached a code 5: students worked together in group and then together as a class as all the groups needed the results of the reseach of other groups to finalize their production.

This rubric is very useful to pre-assess the level of collaboration of an activity when planning it. I'll surely use it when designing a collaborative project. However, I don't really know how that might work in the facts, because even if designed for a high level of collaboration, there might still be "strong" and "weak" members in a team, the fisrt ones leading and influencing decisions, when the others would just follow.

https://nathpino.atavist.com/my-learning-diary
