Discussion Highlights:
-The book is picking up and it is more engaging
-Some Catholics stay towards their faith in hardship like Rodrigues while others turn away like Kichijirō
-The Japanese crush him morally when they torture him since they are going to hurt others and not him
-“ ‘But if this goes on, you’ll all end up as hostages,’ he finally said. ‘Yes, father. It might turn out that way. But even so, we’ll say nothing.’ ‘But this is impossible. Rather than such a calamity it is better for the two of us to get away from this mountain altogether’ ”(Endō 53).
-Mokichi says that he won’t renounce his faith but deep down inside he knows that he is scared and that he will probably fall to the guards will.  This reminds me of God saying to us in the Bible that you will sin even though you say you won’t.  It will always happen but it is okay because God is forgiving.

In general, our meeting improved from last class. This is partially due to the book becoming more engaging. Also, we were more comfortable talking with each other about our thoughts on it which made it a good meeting.
2. We did well with using our novels during our discussion today. We found quotes to support our ideas which made the meeting better in all areas. 
3. One of the things we can improve on is talking about the book for the entirety of the meeting. -He deals with internal struggle or conflict. He thinks about his journey and looks back to see if it was the right decision after all.
-Rodrigues accepts his fate that he will die where his is. He parallels McCandless from Into the Wild because they both knew they would die and couldn’t get out of their current situation so they just kept going through the motions.

-At this point in the novel, the torture is unbearable for Rodrigues.
-The way he is being tormented is crazy because they make him seem like the bad guy. They make him want to apostate by saying he will save others from dying.
-All of us were surprised that Sebastian Rodrigues eventually apostatized. We thought he would be strong and end up dying as a martyr for the faith.
-The tone after seems to show disappointment and unworthiness.
-Once again, a mission fails in Japan.
