The novel centers around an apothecary that different women throughout time have had connections to. The owner of the apothecary, Nella, is a woman who has turned to witchcraft to help other women with whatever endeavors they face as a means of coping with the grief and opposition she holds towards society. A young girl, Eliza, who visits Nella in search of poisons to kill her stepfather later joins Nella's side to help around the apothecary. However, in the present, a fiance, Caroline, battles with reality after finding out that her husband--whose child she may be pregnant with--cheated on her. Though, unexpectedly, the fates of these generations of women collide due to their relationships with the apothecary.
