She understands the tough situation (around the Holocaust time), and does what she can to help. She does not ask dumb questions, or do anything stupid, and knows when to stay quiet (Unlike her little sister Kirsty).

Annemarie's parents are helping Ellen's parents by hiding Ellen. This is important because it shows that even though they are scared, they are putting themselves at risk to help others.

Another character in the book "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry is the protagonist, Annemarie's younger sister, Kirsti Johansen. Unlike the mature Annemarie, Kirsty is unfamiliar to what is going on. Kirsti mainly seems like a character that is here just to build a bit of tension. By this, I mean that since she does not know how to properly act in situations, she sometimes can "blow their cover", such as when she was on the train, and we all thought that she would tell them about Ellen's new year - JEWISH New Year, which would blow the fact that they were hiding that she was Jewish.

This is important because it shows that Annemarie is a mature character because she is able to understand others feelings and put herself in others shoes. She is helping Ellen and mostly when the German soldiers talk to them, Annemarie talks instead of Ellen even though Annemarie is just as scared as Ellen. One character trait that Annemarie has is understanding, helpful, calm and mature. Annemarie is like a parent even though she is a kid she even helps calm Ellen even though she lost her sister.

Setting/ Location and time period

In the story "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry, the setting s a gloomy place where people don't even good things to eat. Annemarie states that they always eating potatoes and there isn't any butter, cream, or cupcakes. The time period is around 1943 around the time of WW2, the characters are in Copenhagen Denmark. This location impacts the characters because Denmark was under German control at the time, the people were very influenced. See, if they were in America or Asia, they probably wouldn't get influenced because they are far from German. The weather in the book seems very gloomy and sad, people are always closing their doors. This setting contributes to the characters because it sort of sets the mood of being sad and depressed. People are scared and worried but they are too scared to speak out. For example in the book it says on page 3, "She glanced back. Ellen was motionless on the sidewalk, a few yards behind her. Farther back, Kristi was still sulking and walking slowly toward the corner. Nearby, a woman had come to the doorway of a shop and was standing silent, watching. One of the soldiers, the taller one, moved toward her. Annemarie recognized him as the one she and Ellen always called, in whispers, 'the Giraffe' because from his stiff collar. He and his partner were always on the corner. He prodded the corner of her backpack with the stock of his rifle. Annemarie trembled. What is in here? he asked loudly. From the corner of her eye, she saw the shopkeeper move quietly back into the shadows of the doorway, out of sight." This is important because it shows how no one is willing to help the CHILDREN. This shows how people are reacting to the conflict which is the war. The setting impacts the mood because on page 37 it says "I really don't think anyone will. But it never hurts to be prepared. If anyone should come, even soldiers, you two will be sisters. You are together so much, it will be easy for you to pretend that uou are sisters. He rose and walked to the window. He pulled the lace curtain aside and looked down into the street.Outside, it was beginning to grow dark. Soon they would have to draw the black curtains that all Danes had on their windows; the entire city had to be completely darkened at night." This is important because it shows that the setting, dark and moody is showing the problems and the worry in the characters. This shows the climate and location is impacting the characters.

An important symbol in the historical fiction story, Number the Stars, by author Lois Lowry is an important object that Ellen wields, the Star of David necklace. Although this item was only present in one scene of the book, it is quite a major scene. I think that it symbolizes the conflict of the story. By this I mean that if you noticed, Ellen was pretty hesitant as to take it off as she was a proud Jew, and the necklace was the proof that she was. The necklace symbolizes that they were Jews, and the fact that ripping it off SAVED Ellen's life, proves that the Star of David is important as it defines who Ellen, her family, and all the other Jews are.

I think that symbolize the freedom which is the thing that they wanted to have. You can not have pink frosted cupcake during the time that Nazis took control of Denmark.
Another symbolism is fishing. I know this because Annemarie's dad, mom, and uncle to hide something from Annemarie by using the word fishing to contact this will also shows that it is one of symbolism in the book "Number the Stars"

In Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, one influential person, that seems like a very minor character at first, Uncle Henrik, is actually critical to the story, and Lowry did an extremely good job on executing his character into the story. Uncle Henrik. Most of us might think: "Hey, he's just Annemarie's uncle who's untidy and really needs a wife (a joke in the story)." But I view him as more than just that. Some important words that seem to drive the rest of the story from the middle of the book is the phrase that courage comes from not knowing, or lack of "fear-causers". These words impacted Annemarie, and led her through the conflicts she runs into along the way. One time some soldiers stopped her in her way of dropping something important off to Uncle Henrik, and so she took this advice, and pretended to not know anything. At the end, this quote saved her, and it let her complete her task without fail.
