They analyze things like artifacts and fossils, which may tell about how they lived (tools, pottery, etc.) or what they looked like (skeletons other DNA samples). Scientists date the artifacts and compare them to other objects to get an idea of time periods between them. Comparing these times can show how the people have evolved and how they have improved over the ages.
