Towards the end of the first chapter, Eddie loses his life trying to save a little girl. A cart crushes him to death, and it is unknown whether the girl survives. However, this scene shows the kind of man Eddie is, risking his life for a stranger he doesn't know. This event begins the whole story, which will take place in heaven.

On page 125, it shows that Eddie's dad is hard on him. Eddie wasn't a bad kid, but his father would never joke around with him or be a supportive father figure to help him grow up. His father was always on him about being grateful for being at the pier and getting a job. Even when Eddie said he was going to marry the love of his life and get a job in engineering, his dad didn't support the idea. I believe this is the reason Eddie stopped talking to his father; he was too hard on him about everything.

On page 111, Eddie meets his third person. Her name is Ruby, and her husband Emile built the pier in her name. She is a kind woman who teaches Eddie about forgiveness. She tells him about how his father saved the life of a man who had raped his wife. Despite this, his father still saved him out of loyalty, even though he had drinking problems. This incident broke his father and explains why he was the way he was to his family. Ruby tells Eddie to forgive, as it is easier to be civil than to be filled with hatred.

This is the scene where Eddie unloads all of his built-up hatred on his father. In that moment, he expressed everything he had been holding inside. But then he forgave his father, saying, "It's fixed," which is what his father used to say because Eddie fixed everything. This sent Eddie to the ground, crying. However, he felt better and more relieved after letting it all out and forgiving his father.
