Strengths and Weaknesses

Based on my results for the true colors self assessment it appears that I had a three way tie between blue, orange, and gold with the green being my least compatible. i think all four of these colors contain aspects that I see in myself but also things that I don't completely agree with which is probably why my result's turned out the way they did. I think my strengths that coincide with my three most compatible colors include valuing organization, goal-oriented, optimistic, drawn to action jobs, value close relationships, and adaptability. I think there were many aspects of the green color description that I could improve upon as well as parts of the other colors including the ability to question authority when necessary, pushing myself to improve, encouraging expression and many others.
For the big five personality test my results for openness, conscientiousness, and extraversion were all close to 50% which put me right near the middle of the scale however for agreeableness and neuroticism my results were on the higher side. A high score for agreeableness means that I experience a great deal of empathy and tend to get pleasure out of serving others and a high score for neuroticism means that I am more likely to respond to a situation with fear, anger, or sadness which I found surprising.
According to the IRM modes assessment I scored the highest on the empathizing section which I think makes sense based on my scores for the other self assessments. I also had scores for the advocating and encouraging sections which are great qualities to have as an occupational therapist. I did not manage to have any score for collaborating, instructing, or problem solving which I think are definitely areas in need of improvement.
Finally for the Froehlich communication survey I scored a 73/100 which I would say is a decent score but there is definitely room for improvement. I have a hard time keeping my mind free from distraction while listening to others speak and I am also not the best at using clarification and summarizing while in a conversation so I will need to work on that.

Goals

Goal #1: Based on my results for the Froehlich communication survey and all of my answers regarding listening, I would like to create a goal to become a better listener. After each of my classes, I plan to go over my notes with a classmate and review what the professor lectured over to ensure that I understood what was being taught. By the end of the semester, I would like to be able to engage in conversation with my classmates about the lecture without having to look over my notes or the powerpoint for help.

Goal #2: According to the big five personality test I scored somewhat high on the neuroticism portion which means that I sometimes respond to situations with fear, anger, or sadness. To combat this behavior, I want to step back and make a note of instances when this occurs and then put the note away. I would then like to revisit the situation later on when after some time has passed and come to a conclusion as to why I react this way. By the end of the semester I would like to have better control over these emotions so that when the time comes I am able to assess the situation and react appropriately.

For my first goal that I created at the beginning of the semester, I said that I wanted to become a better listener and be able to converse with my classmates about lectures without needing to review my notes. I believe that I met this goal because I am constantly engaging in discussions with my peers regarding the things we talk about and class however, I do not really take notes. I have found that I take in information in a much more proficient way when I give my full attention to the lecture rather than trying to rapidly take notes. While I may not have completed the goal the way that I had intended I do still think my goal was met.

My second goal for this semester was focused more on my emotion regulation skills and being able to control my response to situations. For this goal I think I mainly struggled with responding to situations with fear or anxiety due to future assignments. While I do feel like I have made improvements on this goal I do not think I fully reached it. When I have a big assignment coming up like an interview or a skills check I get really anxious and tend to overthink things. I find it hard to take a step back and calm down because I understand why I'm anxious but knowing the cause doesn't make me any less anxious. I think if I were to make a new goal it would be to find coping skills for being anxious to help me relax when the times comes.

I think it would be a really cool way to experience different settings of OT as well as different cultures and the barriers and advantages associated with them.

2. Another long term goal that I have for my career is to work with/advocate for the use of animals in a therapeutic setting. I am not yet sure what setting I would like to work in but once I figure that out I would like to incorporate animal assisted therapy and the benefits it has on that setting.

3. Something that I have always aspired to do even before choosing occupational therapy as my career is to be a leader that leads by example.
Leadership Styles Dan Beverly

The results of the Dan Beverly leadership styles worksheet found that my three most well-developed leadership styles include authoritative, democratic, and coaching. I think in terms of leadership, the most important aspect of leading is to lead by consensus and not control. Democratic leadership embodies just that and emphasizes the importance of inclusivity which is how I hope to lead one day as written in one of my long term goals. According to the big five personality test that we took last semester in Therapeutic Use of Self, my score for agreeableness was quite high meaning that I feel a great deal of empathy for others and find pleasure in serving others. I like that in both of these assessments my results lined up with how I aspire to lead in the future.
On the other hand, my three leadership styles that need work include pace-setting, affiliative, and coercive. In terms of pace-setting, I don't feel confident enough in my work and my abilities that I expect others to always follow my example and take over when they are lacking. So I agree with this result. For affiliative, the leadership quiz placed this style in needs improvement however my scores recorded in the document say otherwise. I think being able to get along with your coworkers is extremely important for work flow. Finally coercive leadership in my opinion is the worst kind. No matter the setting or the work environment I don't believe that the only way to achieve results is by my firm discipline.

Student Leadership Practices Inventory

According to my results from the student leadership practices inventory, the leadership practice that I am drawn to the most is the "Enable Others to Act". This leadership practice fosters collaboration, strengthens others, and emphasizes a team effort. I completely agree with this leadership practice and feel like it suits the kind of person that I am. My results from the Dan Beverly assessment support this as well through my democratic and coaching approach to leadership. I also scored fairly high for the "Encourage the Heart" leadership practice which recognizes contributions and celebrates values and victories. In Therapeutic Use of Self last semester, my results after taking the IRM Modes Assessment showed that I scored the highest on the empathizing section which I feel correlates nicely with the "Encourage the Heart" leadership practice. I think that these two styles, "Enable Others to Act" and "Encourage the heart", pair nicely with one another to create a leader that inspires inclusivity and equality in the workplace.
On the flip side, two of the leadership practices tied for the lowest score on my LPI which were "Model the Way" and "Challenge the Process". These two practices emphasize setting the example and taking risks by learning from experience. I found this interesting because at the beginning of the semester in class when asked what leadership practice we leaned towards the most prior to taking the LPI, I chose challenge the process. I think I am the kind of person that likes to learn from experience however I can also be hesitant to take risk out of a fear of failure. I think that is something that I can work on in the future to make me a better leader.
