Bolivia has an adult literacy rate of 92.46% 
While the male literacy rate is 96.52%, the female literacy rate is 88.58%. The literacy rate has slowly dropped in recent years. 
  • 1 million Bolivian adults are illiterate
  • 1/5 children never complete primary school

Environmental Factors Influencing Wellbeing:
  • indoor and outdoor air pollution;
  • water pollution from industries (particularly mining) and associated adverse health and ecological impacts;
  • vulnerability to natural disasters and climate change risks;
  • inadequate solid waste management
  • Highest rates of undernourishment in South America (15.9%)
  • expansion of the agricultural frontier and unsustainable land use, resulting in deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and soil erosion.
  • farm productivity is among the lowest in South America which leads to increased food insecurity and increase malnutrition.
  • most of the population in Bolivia faces chronic health problems due to food insecurity.

  • Infant mortality rates are falling slowly as health care gradually improves however they are still the highest in South America. 

Human Factors Influencing Wellbeing: 
  • nearly one in two women in Bolivia (47%) experienced some type of intimate partner violence in the past year.

  • Bolivia has experienced political uncertainty and a corrupt government in the past however is now in a period of stability. 
  • The period of stability means that organisations are more inclined to help out with improvements in wellbeing. 
  • Medium human development (as per the HDI in 2012)
  • Poverty is concentrated to more the rural areas
  • 2/3 of the population is living in extreme poverty
  • Poverty is high among indigenous populations.
  • In rural areas, the food is only enough to feed families however none to sell. 
  • Migration is one response to poverty in Bolivia at the moment. (ie. move to other countries = decrease in national population)
  • Poverty -> varying levels in employment, varying quality of infrastructure (eg. schools, hospitals, electricity)

Bolivias has low overall wellbeing, situated 75th out of the 125 countries on the Happy Planet Index. They have a relatively low life expectancy (71.5 years) and their well-being is rated 5.67 out of 10 which indicates that the people do not have high contentment or happiness in their life.

Australia’s wellbeing is currently ranked fourth in the world, with 76.5 percent of Australians are satisfied with the quality of life.

Literacy Rates: 
  • Australia literacy rate for 2018 was 99.00%
  • In Australia: about 44% of adults read at literacy level 1 to 2 (a low level) 38% of adults read at level 3.

Human factors that affect their wellbeing
  • Women are at a significant disadvantage and gender is a determining factor in the opportunities people have in these communities
  • Suffer low education levels and poor infrastructure 
  • Poverty 
  • The spread of fatal diseases (such as HIV, malaria, pneumonia)
  • High infant mortality rate, most do not survive past the age of 7 
  • Shortages on health professionals
  • An ineffective police force with high crime levels 

Environmental factors
  • Water quality is terrible and water is scarce, this leads to health problems
  • Environmental pollution, soil degradation - this lowers the quality of crops which can also lead to health problems
  • Deterioration of aquatic systems lowers the quality of seafood

Well-being in Tanzania is quite poor as they have a low GDP however, moderate Literacy Rates. Water quality and health are low and fresh drinking water is hard to access. Crime and poverty rule the streets and the villages of Tanzania. High infant mortality means a low population and life expectancy. There are also low levels of education in Tanzania and gender inequality. Combining all these factors communicate that Tanzania has quite a low overall well-being.

Above 80% of the population in Afghanistan relies on natural resources such as groundwater and rangelands to survive whilst only 12% of the land there is arable commonly due to deforestation, mining, and land degradation.

  • Women's rights and violence against women and girls. 
  • Attacks on the media and human rights defenders. 
These all affect the well-being of people who live in Afghanistan in a negative manner. Now many struggles with psychological distress, which included flashbacks, depression, suicidal thoughts, and inflicting violence on family members. This affects how they live their day to day lives and many of them lost their jobs due to their mental state.

The overall wellbeing of Afghanistan is severely poor as a majority of its environment is deteriorating and it is in the midst of low economic status, war, as well as immense sickness and inequality. The overall happiness and wellbeing of citizens in Afghanistan is also extremely low while they have very low literacy rates of only 43%.

Although India seems to have good well-being in terms of statistics regarding the GDP and Literacy Rates, it falls in terms of liveability as the living conditions are poor. Healthcare is limited and health is severely poor due to the high pollution levels.

  • Adult literacy rate is the percentage of individuals who are 15 years old or older, who can read and write a short, simple statement on their everyday life with understanding. 
  • It is #91 in the global literacy ranking.
  • 88.7% of all women aged 15 years and over are literate. 86.74% of men are literate.

  • After the independence from Britain in 1966, Botswana was one of the poorest countries in Africa, with a GDP per capita in the region of 70 usd.
  • Economic opportunities were limited, and soon after the country was hit with a five year long drought which heavily impacted the agricultural production. 
Historical
  • During 1966 Botswana gained its independence from Britain.
  • The colonisation of Botswana, meant that the country was used for its resources and that there was a loss of culture.
Political:
  • Corrupt government.
