His father never fought in the first war so he did not go into his son's trial as in the movie although he actually had a friend in the army who sent the letter saving the main character from the prison.

The real reason for the character not to use guns is similar to the movie, but instead of being the father fighting with his mother was the father fighting his brother-in-law.
