  • The first NP program was developed in 1965 by Dr. Loretta Ford and Dr. Henry Silver at the University of Colorado.
  • One of the earliest master’s program was initiated at Boston College in 1967
  • In 1974, the Burlington Randomized Trial Study found that NP’s are able to make referrals when medical interventions were needed.
  • The American Academy of Nurse Practitioner (AANP) was established in 1985.
  • In 1992, the AANP worked with nursing association’s to develop NP’s role internationally

    • Registered Nurse (RN)
    • Holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
    • Must complete NP-focused graduate masters program, or completed a doctoral nursing program. 
    • It is crucial to pass the National NP board certification exam to qualify to become an NP.
    • However, in circumstances where you may not have been able to obtain a BSN, there are exceptions in order to still be eligible to sign up for the NP program. The main ingredient is to have an active registered nurse (RN) license, but to be accepted a BSN is required.
    Certifications:
    • Two major certifications  AANP (American Association of Nurse Practitioners) and ANCC (American Association for Clinical Chemistry)

    While in NP program core courses are pathology, pharmacology, and physical assessments are included in NP students program. when moving up to NP clinician your opportunity starts to open.  

    Once you receive your NP you will need to renew your license by completing 24 hours of appropriate CE including 2 hours of relating to prevention of medical errors every two years.

    • Reviewing and analyzing results in order to help diagnose a problem
    • Recommended treatment options, and schedule further appointments

    • Ensuring patient records are up to date
