The idea is that the ideal person is someone who is cultured, fit, intelligent and is skilled at several things. 

In addition to being a astronomer, mathematician and physicist; he was also a teacher to the later generation of Medici's. The Medici's protected him when the Inquisition charged him with Heresy.
