In Chapter 17, Holden begins by discussing how "certain guys [are] bores" (160). He goes into detail about a brief roommate of his at Elkton Hill, Harris Macklin. What is it that Macklin does that impresses Holden? What does he mean when he professes, "Maybe you shouldn't feel too sorry if you see some swell girl getting married to them. They don't hurt anybody, most of them, and maybe they're secretly all terrific whistlers or something. Who the hell knows? Not me" (161). by Vannah Scarborough

The thing that Macklin does that Holden is really impressed by is whistling. He thinks that he's an awesome whistler, which somehow takes away everything that Holden doesn't like about him. I think that the phrase Holden is saying is that people that you don't like at first can actually be good people deep down. He's going against every judgement that he has made about complete strangers. He's saying that people can be good people if you just take the time to get to know them, and don't judge a book by it's cover.

The one thing that stands out to Holden about the boring Harris Macklin is his ability to whistle. Holden finds Macklin's ability to whistle to be amazing and even considers him not to be a bore because of it. I think by the phrase that Holden says about people secretly being terrific whistlers means that there are more to people than you see. I think Holden is trying to say you might think of a person to be an absolute bore but they could be a terrific whistler or have that one redeeming quality without anyone even knowing it.

Holden is impressed with Macklin's whistling. He says that Macklin is a bore but his "redeeming" quality is his whistling.I think that Holden is being really sarcastic and just throwing something Macklin is somewhat good at to redeem him. I think Holden is just confused about how girls like Macklin and want to be in a relationship with him when they don't want that with Holden who is a genuine guy and is a very good guy. So I think Holden justifies this by saying his redeeming quality is his whistling. Holden just does not understand I think Holden is just trying to be himself and be the best Holden that he can be and he's confused about why he doesn't have a relationship yet. I think Holden just wants another relationship like Jane

I don't think a lot of peoples opinions on a person would change just because they are a terrific whistler. Holden thinks that his skills in whistling are amazing and it completely changes his view on his roommate. This gives Harris Macklin something special and interesting in Holden's eyes. Most people aren't as impressed with whistling as Holden is. It is his hidden talent and he was too quick and judging him just like the rest of the people he has judged in this book so far. He doesn't give himself a chance to get to know them before.

I feel like what holden is trying to say here is to not judge a book by its cover, and he realized that when he met Macklin. He spoke kind of badly about Macklin so when Holden found out about this cool hidden talent that he has he was kin of taken by surprise. When he said "Maybe you shouldnt feel too sorry if you see some swell girl getting married to them. They don't hurt nobody, most of them, and maybe they secretly terrific whistlers or something" (161). He is kind being a hypocrite. He always judges people from the second he sees them or maybe even the first sentence they say.

The thing that Macklin does to impress Holden is that he is a very great whistler. When he says this line, he could mean one of many different things. One is that he could mean that you shouldn't feel sorry for the girl that she is married to such a "bore" as Holden says. Another is that maybe guys like Macklin who are "bores" aren't all that bad after all, however unlikely this might sound coming from Holden. But, the most likely answer is that, once again, Holden Caufield is being a hypocrite, as he often is when he says things like this, even though a few pages before he says the exact opposite. This is another sign of how immature Holden still is, and how he still can't seem to grow up.

This roommate that he describes is just a huge bore. The only good thing that Holden said he had was that he was a good whistler. IN this statement I think he's putting "people that are boring" ahead of him in achieving a valid relationship while admitting that he can't. He says that maybe all these "boring people" have this one good hidden quality that allows them to be content within a relationship. Holden is saying that he doesn't have any delightful hidden qualities that would allow him to enter a real relationship. In reality I don't think this is true, Holden has good qualities he just needs to realize them. He is very intelligent and he is described as being handsome so therefore he just needs to realize these qualities to know his worth.

He always judges people so fast but he comes to realize that maybe there’s more to people then meets the eye: “maybe they’re secretly all terrific whistlers or something. Who the hell knows?

Harris macklin is very good at whistling. This quote means that maybe some people seem boring, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t fun interesting people. You can’t judge someone at first glance. You have to get to know someone and hangout with them and realize who they are before you can judge them or even think you know who they are. You might think someone is boring at first and then you get to know them and you realize how great they are. Holden doesn’t really like macklin but him being good at whistling someone makes Holden forget everything he dislikes about him since his whistling is so impressive.
