In this breathtaking, historical novel by Sonia Mansano, Mami and Evelyn's relationship starts off rude, misinterpreted, and kinda of unkind to each other but slowly starts to move into a loving, kind, and close relationship.

Evelyn thought of Mami as slave, but later in the book realized that it was half of her fault for allowing her and not fighting against Mami's kind gestures. Mami also won't join the Young Lords cause until she sees that it means so much to Evelyn. Evelyn also believed that her mother "covers the sky with her hands," but later in the book Mami shows that she's afraid of someone walking out her life or leaving her alone.

In the end Mami and Evelyn realizes that they love and care for each other despite their differences. Mami shows her love and care towards Evelyn, which she almost always did, when she had to go into the hospital. Evelyn also had this lovely, kind conversation with Mami and asked her to talk and have a conversation with her for a bit, most likely out of her new-found love towards Mami.

Within the chapters, Evelyn mostly harbors resentment towards Mami, although there have been rare occasions where it appears that Evelyn cares a little. Mami mostly showed herself to be way more caring than her daughter, even when Evelyn was rude most of the book. Evelyn and Mami's mother daughter relationship was interesting to read about because slowly but surely, it got healthier. Evelyn didn't hate her mother, and Mami changed her negative view on things and let her daughter believe what she wanted to.

The relation/dynamic between this un-sophisticated family starts with Evelyn (main character) calling her mother a “slave”, not standing up for anybody nor herself, and fat. The saying “to cover the sky with your hand” has a wide display throughout the novel. Mami (Evelyn’s Mother) does this, that’s why this story states this figurative quote. Mami not only covers unpainted patches in the house, but also problems. Evelyn sees the “weakness” displayed and pursues the fact of how her mother is that of “dumb and weak”. Evelyn slams doors and hates the decor on the walls. Another “up-point” is when the church “takeover” was made by the Young Lords, a “gang” that helps support the untreated Puerto Ricans. Mami does not care for this positive matter making Evelyn go livid, for Evelyn supported the Young Lords lots. Halfway between the novel there was a time were Evelyn was saved by her mother, giving her feelings towards Mami asking if she is ok and worrying about her circumstances. The relationship then becomes better after this point. Mami then comes to donate clothes for the clothing drive opened by the Young Lords. This displays on how Mami is becoming that of stronger. Mami then helps more at the Young Lords activities. At the end of the novel Mami has her father sing a song about cold tamales, or a food of that sort, and then passes them out, then announcing that the El Barrio shall cook the so the food shall be eaten nice and hot.

In this memorably inspiring historical fiction novel by Sonia Manzano, in chapter seven, Evelyn becomes interested in a group called the Young Lords. Thinking about it, it makes sense why she was fascinated by them. The Young Lords wanted to do something different, they wanted to do change and do something good for el barrio and in general, the whole community. So, it's easy to see why a 14-year-old girl such as Evelyn would take interest in them, a plus is that they are mostly boys. They are shone attempting revolutionary things to make el barrio better.
The Young Lords begin to sweep up the streets in the hopes of having cleaner streets, which everyone finds a bit odd, but Evelyn doesn't say anything to allude that she dislikes them doing this. When the young lords start coming to her church every Sunday to receive approval for a free breakfast program, Evelyn willingly goes to church to see them because she thinks that what they're trying to do is pretty great, so she is fascinated.

This "fascination" is a healthy, salutary liking of this group because this group is plucky, smart, good-looking, and congenial which would make a good intention and a liking. I would not blame Evelyn for her fascination for the college students, for they acknowledge the safety, cleanness, and the pay for the residents that should be treated the same way as residents in america.

1.The relation/dynamic between this un-sophisticated family starts with Evelyn (main character) calling her mother a “slave”, not standing up for anybody nor herself, and fat.
3. Evelyn Serrano has a fancy towards the Young Lords, not only liking the deeds that are made, but also the looks of the Young Lords. The Young Lords is a group cooperating with the freedom and right of the Puerto Rican freedom and rights. Also, helping out with daily factors: breakfast, clothes, even medical care. Apart from the help the Young Lords, the looks are also appealing to Evelyn,. Calling one the “Handsome Blonde”, also admiring the Young Lord Girls, with the conspicuous styles. The determination displayed by the Young Lords compelled Evelyn also. The fact in which the Young Lords are doing this for the Puerto Ricans greatly impacts the affection between the Evelyn Serrano. So, Evelyn's fascination for the Young Lords is due to the fact of the risk they take for Puerto Rican freedom.
