Video 1: Poverty is allowing students to get the least out of school.

This is a Ted talk given by Dan Cordinali about how students are very disadvantaged by poverty in our educational system. I chose this article as proof to how and why we need to help students with poverty in our systems. 51% of our children are proven to be dealing with poverty in our educational systems. It is even apparent in the educational systems that I have been apart of. I have seen some improvements to help these students by implementing backpack buddies which allows students to take donated food home weekly.
Reference:
Cordinali, D. (Narrator).

This is a Ted Talk given by Tony Allen on what he has observed and how and why we need to change our educational systems. I have chose this article because I have witnessed poverty in the educational systems my entire life, and I have always heard something needs to change. In this video Tony Says Now more than ever we need to come together and we need to start thinking differently about schools. We have all of the information we need that tells us what we need to fix our educational systems.
Reference:
Johnson, T. (Narrator).
Article 1: The Power of Perception

This an scholarly article from SAGE Journals. The article covers the ways in teachers think about how to achieve student learning and what the strong predictors of student achievement are despite poverty level or social class. The study shows me strategies as a teacher of how I can achieve a greater sense of agency in the classroom. I have been having trouble lately with students who have a social class chip on their shoulder. They believed they are defined a certain way rather than defining themselves. This article has helped me look past these definitions these children have and allowed me to perceive them in a way they can learn to their best ability.

Article 2: The Constraints of Poverty on High Achievement.

My personal learning goal is to better understand how poverty impacts student achievement. This article explains the constraints that poverty can have on higher achievement. I chose this study because it focuses and compare and contrasts between all aspects of poverty. They believe it can be just poverty itself that is hindering high student achievement. This article also makes suggestions for improving the identification, services, and success of high-ability learners in poverty situations.
Reference:
Virginia H. BurneyConsultant, Jayne R.

This is Data taken by the white house on how to help rural poverty. I chose this resource because it is physical data on what works best for preventing and improving poverty here in the United States. The Government released a report that finds that programs like refundable tax credits, Social Security, SNAP, and housing assistance lifted about 9.0 million rural people out of poverty in 2013, including about 1.6 million children. Our Government and I myself also believe increasing the resources available to poor children and their families improves children’s education, health, and earnings outcomes later in life.
