The music industry has now since changed however during the 1950's to 1980's the industry was very different to how it is now, the main reason for this aside from technology and its advances is what controlled and manipulated the music industry. This was the ear of the record industry with a four major record labels controlling the industry that were, EMI records a British label, Universal an American label, Sony Music Entertainment is an American Label and lastly Warner an American label established in 1958.
http://open.lib.umn.edu/mediaandculture/chapter/6-4-current-popular-trends-in-the-music-industry/

The major changing factor to the music industry was set in stone some say by the MP3 revolution as now looking back on MP3 it has given way to downloads and sties such as iTunes, Sound cloud and Apple music. No more do people have to go and buy records, singles and albums like the days of the big four where the record labels made their money twisting acts to produce music that sold to wide audiences and generating singles that topped charts which held huge revenue to the war machine that was the label industry. Now we stream and download music Spotify for example allows students to download all the music they want to onto as many playlists they want to with the benefits of both on and offline listening and no advertisements for only £4.99 a month. This revolution not only in the way we listen to music on the go with our phones and music devices such as iPods granting us the ability to in essence be anywhere and have the ability to listen to our music, has sunk the huge label industry and would make it almost impossible for an industry like the one mainly from the 50' to 80's able to work.

Record labels such as EMI for example were always on the look out for new and up coming artists at the time as there was fierce competition between the 4 major labels for big new acts and who would sign them.
Artists and repertoire - This was considered the glamours department in a record label as these people were the ones who wore the suits looking after artists they have already signed and also the people who looked out for new talent, ways in which they would do this would include these people going to gigs all over London for example moreover in the most case artists would try to get in contact with the labels EMI for example where some artists would personally go into the HQ and hand over their existing music in the hope that they would maybe get signed.
