Machado is an animator and illustrator who is most famous for publishing the animation for the Lofi Hip Hop Beats girl. The themes within the work seem to nature, due to the name "chiselled into a branch" and the free flowing movement, death because of the lifeless eyes of the dolls and imprisonment because they seem to be caught in the webs of their own clothing. they look like flies caught in spiders nets. I like that this publication is very personal and uses found imagery. The photos aren't forced or composed and it gives the publication a very raw and emotional feel. 
The cover photo reminds me of the film poster for Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, depicting Uma Therman as her character, Mia Wallace. It's a very uncaring and provocative pose in the poster, but here it looks comfortable and homely.

Eco punk is a revolutionary movement where the care for the planet is the main focus. One of my favourite podcasts, StoryPunks, goes into the differences between Punk and  Eco Punk (aka Solar Punk). The nuances are important in storytelling and even more so in design. 
A great example of Eco Punk media is Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts, which depicts a dystopian world where nature has risen due to scientific complications and human error. The show depicts the intricate details of the importance of survival as well as the importance of taking care of other beings and the earth.

Yes, I think the themes of culture and community affecting your work and yourself later in life is still relevant because we see how those things affect our decisions day to day. I also think the the anti establishment movement can never truly die because all people want different things and therefore no collective society can be truly happy with the established government or hierarchy. 

2. Is there anything you learned that relates to your own emerging practice?
To be more intuitive and self reflecting in my own work. I need to be more comfortable expressing myself instead of just doing work for the sake of work. I also learnt that its okay to rely on others to help me with my practice and that not every battle has to be fought alone. 

3. What do you think illustrators today can learn from the artists featured in the film?
That we can all learn from one another and work can be shared and inspire others. Also that being perfect is not all there is to art.

Beautiful losers is a 2008 Film depicting the growth in a community of creative minds from their difficult early lives to the inspirational and freethinking people they are today. It looks at the importance of subculture and non conforming art.
