Heptapod B is a written language that uses semasiography. In this story, this language is used to show a series of events from the narrator's life in their past and what is in store for them in the future. 

Heptapod B is so interesting to me because it mixes what is human with something alien. Being able to understand this language shows how complex the human brain can be and how it understands its own self-awareness.

I see myself thinking, and I see the equations that describe my thinking, and I see myself comprehending the equations, and I see how the equations describe their being comprehended." Very rarely will there be something written in a language with letters, such as the English language. However, to communicate by sign language and ideograms is not a choice. The people cannot hear nor do they have voices.

The method of communication that is most interesting to me is what they call "mouth-talk". This is essentially just communicating with verbal language. What makes this more interesting to me than the sign language is how the people perceive mouth-talk, and what is needed to be able to communicate in this way. Because the people normally cannot hear or talk, they get implants in their ears and throats to be able to mouth-talk. However, since they mentioned Flowers-in-the-Sun being the only child out of her cousins to not be implanted, it seems only people with wealth are able to afford this luxury. 

Though it seems like a new, better way of doing things, people are not so quick to accept this form of communication. Especially since those who communicate this way tend to stop signing. 

"They do not accept us as they find us... not content with fixing our 'problem', now they say they're 'fixing' our air. As if anything was ever wrong with our air." (Mcdonnell 202)
