Setting up a wireless network by EUN Partnership aisbl

Please comment on the video. In what ways is your wifi network the same or different from Hermann’s? How do you ensure your wifi is fast and copes with demand? What products do you recommend, e.g. Access Points?

My own experience of using tunnelled Wifi at work and at a local university is it can be quite slow, and that the requirement for devices to be brought in for authentication means you need both a general public network and an academic network (eg as Hermann points out, for security with logins for exams.)

The access requires an authentication with password, as in Hermann's school, but I like the fact that each time you go away from school the authentication is deleted from the devices, this is a further security guarantee.

Great presentation, great device, I wonder how much that Motorola device costs and how many of them are in the school? Whats the scalability? Whats the ratio of user to spider device?
In my school we have some basic design issues , not just on the network but within the user management system. We do not have individual accounts for students. Rather we have a generic user name for all student which will give access to any of the student used devices. We do not have BYOD at present. This means that our active directory cannot identify what student is logged on at any given time. To grant WIFI access to our students we would place an Access Point in a general area with a seperate SSID allowing access to schools broadband which is filtered. WIFI access in the classroom for students is still a bit away.

Thank you for the presentation!

At our school we run a very similar setup, AP's with radius. It's not designed nor implemented by school resources. It's done centrally in our county with help from external companies. The advantages is that access to the network is granted by username&password (AD), and access to different resources can be controlled on user or group level. The disadvantages is price, Both design, implementation and maintenance is costly, and require the money-people to budget for it, each year. The can also be annual subscription fees for the software and services.

Finding what’s right in a wifi school can be a great challenge. Ensuring optimum performance on a minimal budget requires a good understanding of the behavior of the applications running over the network and how to supply applications consistently, reliably and securely. Personally I’m not so ready because I haven’t yet a strong confidence level in this area.

My only suggestion is that school districts should evaluate very well client devices for instructional fit as well as Wi-Fi capabilities.

I think installing numerous access points around the school to ensure strong and reliable coverage it’s a good idea of course, but this can be a very expensive solution, especially when the school area is vast…

The next step is setting up a wireless network and connect to eduroam service. The first challenge is to find the best device that meets the criteria for the establishment of eduroam services at the same time that the acceptable price.

Our wifi network differs from the one presented, as our APs support roaming. So it does not really matter to calculate the prefect location of an AP. The APs discuss among themselves the radio which they transmit, and the users don't really know which AP the use as they move through school. It is also different because our students don't have permanent access to the wifi (yet). We use Ubiquity as our AP's. https://www.ubnt.com/

In the primary schools I work for, we are not allowed to put up permanent WIFI. This is because of city regulations inspired by a principle of prudence regarding the possibly dangerous effect of radiation from WIFI-accesspoints on our (youngest) children. The use of stand-alone pluggable accesspoints is allowed only when there is a need for it e.g. a project with tablets or use of notebooks during classes. These AP's are manualy configured routers that bridge the WIFI network to our LAN
Exeption is one or two fixed AP's in area's for teachers or conference rooms. There we use Ruckus AP's.

It's a program called PTE.
Our network at school is very good. Regarding the Wireless network, all school is equipped with Cisco access point model 1242AG Aironet. It is a business grade equipment.
the Cisco Aironet 1240AG Series extends the security, scalability, reliability, ease of deployment, and manageability available in wired networks to the wireless LAN. They act in conjunction with Cisco wireless LAN controller 4400 series. They run under radius protocol with 802.1x authentication. Every user has to authenticate to receive a specific VLAN network, where they gain access to specific services.
So regarding the wireless point of view, i think there isn't much more to grow.

As I said students have a password to access the internet connection but they can use it only at school. we also have a different password with the domain of ministry of education for my region and we can use it also when we are not in the school to access the google classroom . I found the video above very interesting for the kind of solution but I think even using BYOD the biggest challenge is to guarantee a good internet connection when so many persons as there are in my school try to be connected at the same time

In my previous posts I described the situation in the main premises of our school. There is a secondary building which is about a km away: it is a very old, four-storey building with an amount of stone in the masonry which makes it difficult - I was said - for the wifi signal to go through walls and reach every corner. It must be true, because connecting can be hard in some classrooms.
There is a combination of LAN and WLAN in the mentioned building, but the range of the LAN network is very limited for lack of funds. Very recently, funding from the EU has allowed the administration to set up a local WLAN network with a number of access points, on order to provide connection to the web with considerable less spending compared to the cabling of the whole building. Each classroom has been provided with a desktop and projector that are connected to the WLAN. It works, apparently, but students are not allowed to tap into the network. If they use their smartphones, they do it on their own private internet plans.

We actually have 3 different systems in use. In the main teaching area we have Ruckus APs (25 in total) with a dedicated hardware controller. It is a very stable system but the UI is not great. It does integrate with Windows AD - users authenticate once via a captive portal and this generates a unique key for that device and associates it with a specific SSID. You can restrict students to having a single device but allow staff have several drives. There is good granular time control for SSIDs. In the student common rooms we have 4 Meraki (part of Cisco now) APs - these have a cloud based controller and you must pay continually for a licence to avail of this. The UI is lovely and very intuitive - it also has a basic MDM for free. Not good for budget conscious. And finally in another area used only by the Benedictine monks who live adjacent to the school we have Ubiquiti single band APs there are the most effective of the Ubiquiti range. If you are going to use the new higher spec Ubiquiti gear then the cost differential between Ruckus/Meru diminishes. Budget is generally the key driver! Reliable copper infrastructure and robust PoE switches are crucial - so invest in this first and of course your internet connection. The end user wifi experience will ultimately by dictated by the weakest link: connection -> switching -> infrastructure -> AP.

It's difficult to contact the administrator because it's a parent who work as a volenteer for the school (!!!!!!?????????) I konw but this is our situation.

In my school we have a remote server but as we have a PDI in each class, each computer work as a wireless too, so in this case the central Wi-Fi doesn't bring down because each class can use their onw WiFi with a specific password. Everything can be controled on remote and the firewall is so strong than some time you have to ask for premission to get into some specific pages. Does it work with enough fluence or fast enough? That's a different question.

All our ten school buildings have already been wired for ethernet in most of the rooms, still we are actually expanding each local network with WiFi access points ( I personally would recommend Ubiquity Networks "UniFi AP" series for good signal power, low cost and ease of configuration). The Wi-Fi service, protected with a passphrase, is generally made available for teachers with their own devices, but in some cases also lab computers and interactive displays in classrooms are connected wirelessly. Our connection bandwidth is very good and works at optimal speeds.
