In chapter ten the book talks about how students are encouraged to replicate the white students. This section in the chapter talks about how students should give up who they are where they come from to be someone new. The students need to give up their street language and their culture to make themselves seem white. This happens in schools and at their homes. Instead of creating a school atmopshere that wants student to think of one race as superior the school should create a culture that is inviting and welcoming of all different races. A culture that celebrates everyone instead of just one race is a school culture we should strive for.

In the book the author creates a cogen to come into the classroom durning lunch to workout the problems they were having in the class. In the book the students are telling the teacher what are some ways that the class can improve on to create a better learning environment. When the students tell the teacher what he needs to work om, he does not believe them and gets on to them for not taking the cogen seriously. He is not able to accept the fact that the students have trouble learning when he yelling at students. The students video taped him yelling at the students to make him believe them. This is a great strategy to do in the classroom to see how the teacher can improve in the class to create a better learning environment. This lets the teacher know what type of improvements they need to make.

Technology in the classroom in the book is looked at as negative thing. The teacher wanted to bring technology into the lesson and was excited to share with the students the exciting activity he had planned for them, but when the students saw the computers they got disappointed and upset. The teacher was informed that the students only use computers in the class if they have to do a lot of math work. The students did not know they were allowed to do other things on the computers at school. As a teacher I would have more activities on the computer to allow the students a chance to work on them without having such a negative view on them.

In the conclusion of the book the author talks about how become a teacher gives you the information to teach a class, but you must decided on how you want to teach your students. Will you teach your classroom in the same style that you were taught while you were in school? Or will you create a new path for you go down? Creating a new way for you to teach your students and make it original or to borrow some techniques from other teachers is a great way to teach your new class, but it has its challenges. As a new teacher you are still working to see what what works for you and the students. Whatever you decide to do in a classroom you must try it out for a small period to see if that is what is best for your students.

The very last tip the author gives is that you become the type of teacher that you surround your self with. If you surround yourself around negative teachers who complain and talk down to other teachers and students you are allowing yourself the oppournity to become that type of teacher. This is relevant not just to teachers, but for everyone. This something you can teach your students about who they surround themselves with and also their friends. You become the company you keep. To stay a positive teacher you must keep a positive outlook on the profession and everyday life.
