Instead of using automobiles they started using rail technology for transportation until street car companies began to sell more cars and more freeways were built. As automobiles improved, more people started to greatly rely on them. Examples of car models in the 1920s are: Fiat 1919, Detroit Electric 1920, Pierce Arrow 1922, and Citroen 1923. As the 1920s progressed, engines started becoming quieter, faster and lighter. Many of these new cars were made for families. They also started becoming more attractive to the eye, causing more and more people to purchase them. In 1927, the first electric cars were invented.

(Dutton, 24-30)
(Noah, 3, 5)

The Scopes Monkey Trial

In the 1920's recent discoveries of fossils led some to start researching more into the theory of evolution and how modern day humans came to be. Disgusted by the mere suggestion of evolution, the state government of Tennessee passed a law stating that science teachers within the state were forbidden from teaching the theory of evolution in any way. In 1925, the young science teacher John Scopes was charged in violation of this law, starting a nation-wide controversy. Taking place in Dayton Tennessee, the trial consisted of Scopes' defending attorneys, Clarence Darrow and Dudley Field Malone, against the prosecuting attorney William Jennings Bryan. In the end, Scopes was found guilty and was fined for his actions. This case had a massive impact on the community due to the fact that it attempted to stop the comparison of new scientific discoveries with religious beliefs.

(Larson 28-30, 190-193)
("Darrow and Malone to Defend Scopes")
