• Problem/ Solution - Explain that in a biography, authors often describe problems the person faced and how he or she dealt with the problems.

• The author’s purpose in a biography is to tell what makes a person interesting or unusual. How a person responds to a problem gives readers insight into what the person is like.

• Reading about the solution of the problem reveals more about why the person is special or unique.

Identifying a text’s structure can help them better understand information in the text. Practice identifying text structure in Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table.

• The narrator is the person telling the story. When a text is told in first-person point of view, the narrator is a character in the story. When a text is told in third-person point of view, the narrator is a person outside the text. In each case, refer back to the Anchor Chart to identify key words that signal the type of narrator.

• In real life the description of an event may be very different depending on who is telling the story. Offer an example of a recent event told from an adult point of view, and then describe the same event from a student’s point of view.

• Students that they might tell a story or think about events differently than a narrator. Readers do not always agree with everything that people do or say in a text.

• Practice identifying point of view in Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table.
