The migration stories in these videos, with their accompanying powerful images and incredulous statistics, were simultaneously heartrending and uplifting. I was quite moved by the tears of fear, joy and relief coming from the migrants. Moreover, the enormity of the numbers of people needing to move in contrast with the minimalist efforts of the countries that could better support these populations was frustrating and upsetting.

Ultimately, though, I found myself looking for my own personal story in these videos and I came up empty. The three basic reasons for people moving from one country to another (fleeing war and tyranny, seeking better economic opportunities, or escaping natural disasters) are all logical and understandable. What was missing from the lineup, however, was the unique version that can be found in many Israeli immigrants like myself. My husband and I did not uproot our family of six and move over 11,000 miles away for any of the above reasons. In fact, our move is mostly consider illogical by the average individual. It can possibly be explained by religious ideals, or a search for a better environment for raising children, but neither of these fully express the variety of reasons that lay behind our migration decision. We, too, shed tears of fear, joy and relief. We, too, suffer from feeling like we're never fully a part of the new home we've chosen and adopted. We, too, miss the family that we've "left behind."

Finally, as a teacher of Early World History, I am struck by the full circle that many now experience. Humanity began as small communities of migrants, wandering through the world in search of food, shelter and safety. The nomadic lifestyle was a given. Then, as civilizations arose, the ideal was to settle in one place without the need to wander anywhere. Now, with technology, transportation, and no shortage of world conflicts, people seem to be more "nomadic" then ever - be it intentional or not. I am struck by the infinite number of personal stories which express the ideas of fleeing one's home, seeking a home, finding a home, building a home, making a home and feeling at home. Ironically, aren't these diverse concepts basic similarities that all humans share?

While it makes sense for every country to determine its own migration policy, there is no escaping the understanding that humanity as an international community needs to do a much better job at sharing the toll of migration and refugees.

2) Whenever most of us think of migration and refugees, we tend to ignore the natural disasters element. As the climate crisis progresses I believe we will witness increasing examples of people fleeing from disaster struck areas. This will require the world to change current migration policies and will hopefully raise compassion and awareness to parts of the world less fortunate than our own, although chances are that the opposite might actually occur and we will find ourselves living in an even more polarized world than it is today.

1) immigration can occur due to many reasons and considerations. Sometimes these are voluntary, other times they are not. In any case, this phenomenon is drawing, justifically, a greater attention in the field of research . We cannot be ignorant an indifferet towards all the powerful experiences that are lived by so many migrant individuals including children around the world.

2) we cannot deny all the painful experiences of loss, misery, confusion. and uncertainty that are followed by any immigration process. At the same time,we can feel optimistic and hopeful that despite all the difficulties, a great number of immigrants are integrating well in the new culture by establishing a new life and creating new oppourtunities for themseleves.

The clips made me think back to when ealry humans wandered the Earth and migrated to other continents. We look at these migratory movements as foundation blocks for civilazations, yet how ironic is it, that now, those so called civilizations reject migrants, offspring of common ancecstors, and make little to no effort to save them from doom.

I also looked at these clips as a migrant myself, having moved to the States and then to Israel. I related to the hardships and success stories that make up the best part of our experiences as foreigners, having to make a place for oursleves into a new society. It goes without saying that I did not experience the kind of trauma the people in the clips did, but I had my fair share of challanges and proudly took them on .

I take from these clips two things to keep in mind. Firstly, the circumstances under which people decide to migrate is very important to understand. There is a big difference in the attitude and overall condition of people who migrate because they are looking for more or better opportunities and others who were forces to leave because they we forced to or because it is unbearable to stay. I hope to be sensitive towards migrants no matter why they moved, but extra sensitivity in neccessary when people are fleeing for their lives or had to leave their home against their will.

The second point is who should bare the responsibility of these new migrants? I think this is a complex question. While we expect the developed world to share in this responsibility it is also unlikely that they will do so. If only there was an international body that could help raise funds and help refugees without corruption and bias... maybe this can be a solution. Until then, we must all take the matter to heart and find creative solutions to better these people's lives. Developed countries cannot shy away because these people are not on their doorstep.

Malamud Elina

Migration occurs for several reasons, however all these reasons have something in common. People leave their countries in order to have a better life for themselves and their children. The first reason which trigeers immigration is higher wages, people want to earn more money and to have a better financial future. The second reason is environment, people flee their native countries because of the natural disasters. Another reason is wars.
For example, Syrian refugees have fleed Syria and got permission to live in some European countries.
While some people are eager to imbrace immigrants and volunteer in different centers , others are not happy with the phenomenon. They are worried that immigrants will take their jobs. In addition not many rich countries have agreed to host immigrants from Syria. Some gulf countries have refused to take Syrian refugees.

These video present the complexity of migration and how widespread it actually is.
As the daughter of parents who made Aliya from the Soviet Union, I'm in fact the byproduct of the positive assimilation and integration of migrants. My parents were given opportunities to build a good and stable life in Israel, as they have, and now I am the one building mine.
However, these video show the wide spectrum of the experience of migrants and challenges they face when not having the same opportunity as my parents have had. Some leave their origin country without a clear destination, as they are forced to do due to a variety of reasons which are out of their control. I cannot imagine the experience of leaving behind all you have , and hoping to find a place that will accept you and your family with open arms. Migrants, refugees, Olim, are all willing to change their entire lives in order to have a good one for themselves, but especially for their families.
The things that I take from these videos are gratefulness for what I have and respect for all those who are fighting with whatever little they have for the small change of creating a better life for their loved ones.

Emily

Two things struck me watching these films --
1. How a country receives migrants says a lot about their values and strength of character. I remember growing up in New Jersey, one year in 4th grade my class "adopted" a kid from Laos. While looking back I can imagine what a terrible ordeal he must have been through to leave his home and come to us, the kids worked hard to make him feel happy and included. This was probably one of the most important educational experiences for us as students. We learned to tolerate and understand someone who was very different than anyone we knew before. We practiced empathy and inclusiveness. A country that welcomes and integrates immigrants strengthens itself as well as those they welcome.

2. This leads me to my second point. How a country welcomes its immigrants can affect how they succeed, which in turn affects the country as a whole. If you see immigrants as fellow world citizens, strong and resourceful (as they often must be in order to get to your border), and you help give them the tools they need to get off on the right foot, they will make your country stronger.

There are more than 2 reasons for immigration but I came away with 2 main reasons. The first one is the environment. There are way too many people in some of these countries to sustain a proper regiment of food.
The second reason is because most of these immigrants come from failed states that dont look over for the people and their social welfare.
Finally you have western countries paying for these refugees and immigrants to replace their own populations for lower wages.

Migration is a natural thing to birds which need to move away from their homes in order to find a new place to call their home for obvious reasons of survival. Interestingly, the reasons for humans seem not to be so different: lack of basic security due to natural or social disasters of all kinds are most acceptable. Yet, there are also reasons of personal interest that seem less alarming to the observer who cannot identify with the motifs that drive someone away from her or his natural surrounding. Those who make it are usually fortunate and happy if the target destined country aceepts refugees. The refugees are willing to face the danger of their jurney and live in camps or as illigal immigrants for the sake of escaping the unbearable circumstances, whether living in a war zone or barely ensuring ends meet. For that, some county leaders oppened the doors for refugees.

As much as it is urgent to help those who are escaping, the refugee crisis or the issue of immigration is creating a dilemma in the countries being fled into. Financial and economical reasons are mainly the underlying issues for such dillemmas that host countries face, which becomes a bigger concern of such countries, such as the European countries . The refuge crisis or immigration can cause tension between the immigrants/refugees for competing in the jobmarket as a result, or even dillemas for policy makers as well.

The first video presents the extent of the migration - 60 million regugees fleeing from war zone, hunger or unemployement. I find this video very powerful because it was very emotional, it triggers empathy and care. In additioin to the man factors that cause people leave their homeland it also raises questions how can the refugees be helped. How both the wealthy governments and citizens can and should respond to this phenomenon? Watching the first video makes one to realize that this is a global problem and must be attended seriously because its impact is profound on economical and cultural levels. While the second video regarded the migration though the lens of facts, numbers, countries, factors - man made or nature made.

1. The video brings forth the fact that migration is mostly caused by inequality - between living environments and regimes around the world. So people might want to move from one place to another to optimize their lives and those of their families. However, the same disparity is perpetuated by the attitudes of developed countries which only accept migrants when it benefits their economy, and often in "poor working conditions, unfair conditions and low wages".
2. Seeing how reluctant developed countries are to receiving new immigrants, I am even more worried for a humanity facing an increase in natural disasters. What is claimed to be a given - the right to move from one place to another, is in fact more related to maintaining power than to achieving or at least genuinely attempting to achieve) equality. If only countries/people would give to others what they would expect if the roles were swapped, this would be a fairer world!

Specifically the scenes of many people cheering the migrants that are arriving, showing joy and empathy to them.
2) The sorrow and frustration of the migrants themselves and the difficulties that they face are evident in the clip. Even though I have read about this, it is very different to see the photos and hear the testimonies.

I would take ithat we always have to take into account that immigration has positive but also negative aspects. People who willingly and definetly are forced to immigrate face many difficulties before, while and after the process.
I would also like to stress out the gap and inequality that lies between rich and poor/states in war countries. I believe we all need to share responsibility for this situation.

Both videos tried to cover the entire pallete of migaration concept shades including soul touching stories of immigrants, political aspects and reasons of migration. Observing the permanent change of residence by an individual or group can't leave you indifferent. I can definitely distinguish 2 broad categories of migration such as internal and international after watching those videos. I'd like to emphasize the Barak Obama's speech where he mentioned that "It is our moral obligation as fellow human beings to help immigrants".
However, governments will never shut their eys on illegal migration and migrant smuggling which are a dynamic global criminal activities. Poverty, social and political instability push people towards criminal networks to facilitate their unauthorised entry, transit or stay in the EU, the US, Canada (countries mentioned in the video clips). Therefore, the special governmental commisions take strong action to prevent irregular migration which can cause a diversity of the negative consequences such as moral deterioration, work load, rejection by the families, etc.

The first thing that I take from the clips is the numbers. I had no idea that 3% of the world's population are immigrants. i understand all the reasons for migrating and i realize that it's a global issue that should concern each and everyone of us.
The second thing that I take from the clips is the emotional aspect. watching the people and what immigrants go through can really break your heart. I understand and I have sympathy for everyone of them. It was great to see how the world can and come together and find a solution.

he stories presented in the videos are not new in our world. These stories, and others to follow, will continue to show up as long as we do not strive to put a permanent end to them. We can show sympathy, donate limitlessly, or even keep accepting greater numbers of migrants into our nations. However, this will only help to make things better temporarily. Therefore, eradicating the main causes of migration is the most logical solution, as long as the causes are a direct result of human behavior and not the outcome of Mother Nature's wrath.

If the major cause of migration is economic or just to find a better life outside the home country, it will be possible to handle it relatively well in several ways. For example, rather than investing funds designated for assisting migrants, they could be invested in upgrading the infrastructure in the regions where the majority of migrants come from.Furthermore, these funds could be used to lay a better economic foundation, allowing poor countries to provide more jobs for their citizens, which will consequently improve their quality of life.

On the other hand, if natural disasters are the cause of migration, there is little we can do but do our best to help and support those who are affected.
