We spent the afternoon exploring physics in a workshop with Neil.

STEM event - Road to RIAT

In the afternoon, we took part in a competition to design a sustainable aircraft of the future. When designing we had to consider the following:

*What will it be made out of?

*How will it be powered?

*What makes it stand out above all of the others?

*How is it sustainable?

We have been learning about different forces, including air resistance. We learnt this force acts against the surface of a moving object. We tested this with our investigation, where we made parachutes of different sizes to see if the size of a parachute affected the time it took for it to fall from 1m.

We discussed variables and which we would measure, change and keep the same.

We conducted an investigation to see which surface had the most friction.

We discussed what a variable was and which ones we would keep the same, which ones we would change and which we would measure.

We collected our results and talked about what they tell us. To finish the lesson, we considered when friction would be helpful/useful and when it wouldn't be.

Mixing and Dissolving - Is it soluble or insoluble?

We conducted an investigation to see which solids were soluble and insoluble in water. We talked about which variables we would keep the same.

Our NS: needed clarifying after the lesson as lots of children thought that the salt had disappeared, but it hadn't, the salt was still in the water, it had just dissolved.

We will revisit this as part of a 'quick quiz' to check understanding.

Reversible changes - dissolving, filtering, sieving and evaporation.

We looked at a mixture, which included raisins, paperclips, salt, sand and water and we considered how we could get each solid back.

As part of our investigations, we thought about whether each step had to be done in a specific order.
