The New York Times (specifically Nikole Hannah-Jones) spearheaded an in depth look at how all American institutions are deeply rooted in racist sentiments and values. A component of this information is to weave these retrospectives into school curriculums to showcase how minorities have been set up to fail in America. This has been met with very harsh criticism from conservative politicians, with their reasoning being that is "wipes away American nationalist attitudes." It is a currently hotly contested debate. 

Another note about this: Nikole Hannah-Jones was also up for tenure review at UNC, where she was denied.
