Group Members

11366700

22010543

22008683

Key Points from the ARH Policy Document:

• All adolescents in school will have access to comprehensive and age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health information and services.

• Out-of-school adolescents are a difficult-to-reach group. Therefore, it is important to identify and target these groups separately for adolescent sexual and reproductive health services.

• Diverse groups of vulnerable youth with unique needs in sexual and reproductive health require targeted programs to ensure they're not left behind.

While Ghana offers community-based, adolescent-friendly health services like counseling, family planning, and STI prevention, it also provides school-based health services and mental health support. However, low utilization, limited provider training, and data gaps hinder their effectiveness. Addressing these challenges is crucial to reaching more adolescents and empowering them with the knowledge and care they need.

DKT International in collaboration with Marie Stopes International Ghana (MSIG) and Grameen, designed the ‘No Yawa’ project for the youth (adolescents) of Ghana to be able to access SRH advice in an environment that is safe, non-judgmental and free from any pressure.

WAPCAS and mothers2mothers mobilize resources through donors and partnerships to supplement government efforts in expanding adolescent SRH to include HIV mentorship programs for marginalized groups across the country and continue to maintain linkages with government agencies and coordinating bodies involved in SRH.

Ghana Youth Coalition on Reproductive Health (GYCORH) supports young researchers focusing on SRH issues faced by marginalized groups like LGBTQ+ youth. They collaborate with stakeholders, and align with global frameworks to create comprehensive sets of indicators that reflect the impact of interventions on the health and well-being of young people.

Hope for Future Generations (HFFG) collaborates with academics to assess the impact of their programs on girls' education and SRH knowledge. Similar to other NGOs, they contribute to the development of indicators for monitoring and evaluating adolescent SRH programs.

Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) provides SRH services and also funds research on youth access to contraceptives and conducts community-based studies on SRH attitudes and behaviors. They advocated for the inclusion of comprehensive sexuality education in the national curriculum.

Despite the vital role of NGOs in improving the SRH outcomes of adolescents and young adults, they are faced with common limitations of long-term sustainability, not disseminating research findings for impact and limited funding and resources.

Microeconomic and ideational viewpoints are both included in explanations of declining fertility. Microeconomic theories concentrate on the financial aspects of family size, like the expense of childrearing and the employment prospects of women. On the other hand, ideational theories highlight changes in cultural and societal norms, values, and attitudes about the size of a family and methods of reproduction. When taken as a whole, these ideas offer a thorough comprehension of the complex factors underlying falling fertility rates.

Understanding population trends is important to inform dev’t policies. Ghana has struggled to achieve some goals such as reducing TFR to 3.0, increasing life expectancy to 7.0 and educating women beyond secondary school level to 80% by 2020. Population has also increased by 1.92% in 2023. However, TFR has declined by 1.33% in 2023. It has also made significant improvement in access to health care, education, sanitation and water, and has reduced death caused by infectious diseases. More is to be done to improve quality of life of people.
