We’re using a quantitative design with purposive and cluster sampling across five community colleges. We'll analyze matriculation rates before and after MOC program implementation and survey MOC students to identify the resources that supported their success.

As seen with the studies we referenced in our proposal, there is a plethora of research regarding the experiences of Men of Color in higher education. Based on this literature, it is our belief that more research must be done to identify what factors have the greatest impact on student success for male students of color and to quantify their impact.

Past research highlights three key factors in supporting Men of Color in higher education. First, representation matters. Second, mentorship by professionals of color enhances belonging and boosts matriculation. Third, when culturally responsive support is integrated into institutional practices, student persistence and completion rates significantly improve.

Men of color programs and initiatives have been implemented in community colleges to increase their academic success, sense of belonging, and overall engagement in higher education. Studies show that African-American and Latinx males graduate at lower rates than their white counterparts and have retention, persistence, and community college vertical transfer rates lower than those of their female peers. While these institutional efforts appear to offer positive social and emotional benefits, there is a significant gap in the systemic evaluation of their effectiveness in achieving concrete educational outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of men of color programs implemented in higher education by examining their impact on key student success outcomes, including retention, graduation, and transfer rates.
