Until the 19th century, Hawaiians were able to avoid certain death if they physically reached Pu’uhonua O Honaunau. Pu'uhonua was a place of sanctuary for defeated warriors, noncombatants, and those who violated the kapu during battle. No harm came to those who reached the boundaries of what is now known as a National Park. There was a 965 foot wall known as the "Great Wall" surrounding the place of refugee. Once inside the compound’s of the Great Wall, sanctuary was guaranteed by the kahuna. They were obligated to offer forgiveness to all fugitives no matter how large or small the infraction. This site is one of the most significant sites on the archipelago due to its religious and political significance.

"I have actually been to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau twice. The first time was during my spring attachment with Marist. The second time was this past Thanksgiving. Through your research you have probably discovered that this was and still is considered sacred land. This was considered a "safe place" for those who broke the tribes law. From what I remember, if you were discovered breaking the law the person who witnessed it was responsible for carrying out justice. However, if you made it to this land and stayed for a certain amount of time you were deemed forgiven by the Gods and Goddess and were allowed to go back with no fear of punishment. Additionally this land was safe during times of war, which were very often. As time passed and the tribes were unified under King Kamehameha war was less often and others carried out justice. So this sacred land was used by the royal family. This land is still considered extremely sacred and is protected as a national park. I'm not a great photographer but I've attached a few pictures I've taken there."
