SATELLITE MONITORING

This strategy shows protected areas and geographical restrictions on the spread of soybeans and ranching are great in theory, but without monitoring it is hard to prove that such restrictions are being adhered to. In order to monitor the pace of deforestation, the Brazilian Space Agency launched it’s DETER satellite in 2004. DETER monitors changes in forest cover in real time, producing a report of deforestation hotspots for law enforcement every two weeks.
The effectiveness of satellite monitoring in Brazil is successful as it is estimated to have prevented deforestation of 59,000 square kilometers of rainforest from 2007 to 2011.
The problem implementing this strategy is that the report only comes every 2 weeks, and some people might destroy/clear the forest within that 2 weeks.

Article: https://howtoconserve.org/2015/09/04/saving-the-amazon/
Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tk9BntFE_BY
2.28min

And to let the public know that their particular action is giving harm to the world. Public education is very effective as the government or the speaker can talk sense to them and let them understand their wrongdoings or learn more about the world. However, there are just some people in the world that are not wiling to co-operate and just like to do their way, and not spare a thought for others and might just think about making money.

Public education is the teaching of the younger generation on deforestation. This strategy is successful in managing deforestation as it raises awareness on the effects and causes of deforestation and has the potential to make lasting positive changes. For example people who are educated on deforestation might now buy fair-trade and organic products, or products certified by the Rainforest Alliance, the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), or the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). However, it takes time to change people behaviour or mindset towards deforestation and the success of public education depends on this. Hence, this is one of the biggest challenges this strategy has.

Satellite monitoring
Satellite monitoring allows the rangers to track down where possible prevent forest clearance. Each seasons farmers still start fires and use chains to clear the land but the rangers can move rapidly to the affected areas to confiscate the equipment used, fining the farmers and cutting access to bank loans and business markets. Because of this operation, carbon emission from deforestation has been reduced to 56 per cent. Next year, two new satellites with higher definition and radar monitoring will enable the rangers to sharpen their remote eyes. But despite their efforts to reduce the number of deforestation, the prices of soy bean has increased and more farmers are taking the risk to burn the forest to get more land to grow more soy bean. It will be harder for the rangers to stop the farmers from deforestation.

An incredible amount of political will was required to accomplish such changes, and the Brazilian people deserve the majority of the credit for creating a social movement. It requires much cooperation of environmentalists, indigenous groups, rubber trappers, and unions, paved the way for the government actions described above.

Public education is what we should take as our first priority in stopping, deforestation. because of many human needs, trees are continuously cut down, practically at a rate of a hundred trees per minute. Just think. A hundred trees per minute. Is that really what we need? Or are we biting off more than we can chew? the public always seem to believe, the Amazon can feed the world for some time, and by then other trees would grow back. But think. For every 100 trees, only 1 fully grows. That isn’t enough to sustain our world population of 7.6 billion. Not only that, but the animals, and every living thing around us. the public has to stop using all the wood we currently are, to save ourselves and our future. Without the trees, we have no oxygen. Without the trees, the world map would turn red. Without trees, no amimals would come. Is that the world we want to live in? Make a change, for a better future

Public education is a good strategy in decreasing deforestation rates as it educates the public on the disadvantages and consequences of deforestation , this strategy is successful as it teaches people more about the consequences of deforestation and ways to play a part in saving the rainforest. The public can know more about what will happen if our forest is gone and how important the forest is. The forest provides us with more than 20% of the oxygen around the world , it provides us with fresh air. Besides that , the public can also be equipped with the knowledge to save the forest like saving paper , paper is made from bark of tress , if the demand of paper decreases , lesser trees will be needed to cut down. Although public education is good , but it all depends if the public wants to listen to the advice , it will be harder to convince those who do not want to heed our advice to help save the forest.

1) Over half of the Brazilian Amazon is now designation as national parks or indigenous lands, effectively protecting an area larger than Greenland from intensive logging and agriculture. The push for more protected areas began in 2003, pioneered by a new Brazilian administration that was determined to curb deforestation and illegal logging. The recognition of indegenous land rights ensures the cooperation of locals and serves to preserve their way of life as well as the forest.
2) I feel that this may be successful as they are protecting large areas, making them off-limits to other people. These large areas are mainly occupies by various animal and plant species and numerous indegenous people who call the rainforest home. With it being cordoned off, this area has been well preserved after a long while.
3) There are numerous people who simply cannot obey the law and might destroy certain trees in that area. Also, cordoning off such a huge area does not allow people to explore much of the rainforest.

The good thing about this strategy is that it preventsforest clearance , which has slowed more than 75% since 2004 and it reduces carbon emmisions from deforestation by 56%.

i think that protection of forested area is an useful way to reduce illegal logging and burning of forests. Over half of the amazon forest is now designed as national parks or indigenous lands, which prevent excessive illegal logging, conserving the forest and reducing the impacts of deforestation that will cause harm to our environment. Satellite Monitoring that has been carried out by a group of rangers also contributed to the decrease in rate of deforestation. I think that this monitoring strategy is really helpful as they can confiscate equipment from the farmers or woodcutters, levy fines and also cut their access to bank loans and business markets, which will lead to a lower chance of more illegal logging or burning down of huge forest areas. One problem of this Satellite Monitoring strategy is that the team of rangers will take some time to respond, which sometimes is too late to stop people clearing parts of the forest. From the video, it also talked about the problem that farmers want to continuously expand their productions of soy, so as to overtake US and become the country with the world's biggest soy production. Hence they will continue to clear large areas of land for their crops, which might be unstoppable if the ranger team is unable to respond faster than before. However, it is also said in the video that 2 more satellites with higher definition and radar monitoring will be produced, hence it will increase the efficiency and reduce deforestation rates much more quickly

Public education is important for people to understand about the rate of deforestation and the negative impacts that it will bring.
Deforestation have been carried out for a long period of time, till now.
The rainforest is certainly useful for human uses, however, people are taking it for granted and cutting them down for sale.
What if there is only ONE tree left after years of deforestation? Reforestation needs a longer period of time compared to the speed of deforestation. That is a question that people might not think about.
Thus, public eduaction should be carried out to educate people about the importance of trees and slow down the rate of deforestation.
People do not think about the rainforest when deforatation take place, including the living things there. Like animals that are going extinct, this is something that is not really something good that is happening.
If different species of animals are going extinct, will all the animals die out one day?
Speeches should be conducted to the public to teach everyone about the negative impacts about deforestation and make them aware about what have us, humans, been doing.
Even so, there is not much public education about deforestation. Thus, a lot of people might not be aware about this situation that rainforests are facing. There might also be no one who is willing to conduct public education about this. This is a real challenge that some people who care about the trees are facing, and to no avail, they could not do anything about it.

Protection of forested areas is one of the strategies that is implemented in the Amazon to manage deforestation, protecting the Amazon. Protection of forested areas refers to the setting of laws to protect an area from unfavourable activities. Under this strategy, unsustainable logging and agriculture practices are banned through laws or other measures, reducing the rate of deforestation. Satellite Monitoring has been used by a team of rangers to track down areas where deforestation is taking place. Where possible, it prevents forest clearance in the Amazon. It appears to be working as the rate of deforestation in the Amazon has slowed by more than 75% since 2004, and therefore, has been successful in managing deforestation in the Amazon. Unfortunately, some people simply do not want to obey the law and areas are continued to be cleared. In addition, as the farmers want to continuously expand their productions of soy in order to overtake United States, large areas of the Amazon are cleared in order to create land for the growing of soya beans and other crops, increasing the rate of deforestation. The team of rangers may not be able to respond in time to stop the clearing of the areas. Therefore, there are problems in implementing this strategy. From the video, it mentioned that the reason for this very successful strategy is the close cooperation between the monitoring and control system, tackling the issue of deforestation together in the Amazon.

public education is a good strategy as it is important to let the public know about the impacts of deforestation and how it affects their live as well as other's lives. The rainforest is important as it provide habitat to fauna and flora and i provides us with resources too. By educating the public, they can help by conserving paper. although the there might be public education on deforestation, most people might not try to help and continue their daily lives, and not saving paper and wood products. this is because they might think that there is already help given, so they do not need to help.

In the video, they mentioned that there are people who work with the government to help in the protection of forested areas. They have high technology and with the governments help, they are able to locate people who are contributing to deforestation. After locating, they will fly in the helicopter to the place where those people are found. Through the video, they told us that although the rate of deforestation have decreased about 70% since 2004 due to those people who goes to find others that contributes to the rate of deforestation, but it is very hard to do so as it is not easy to track down these people who contribute to deforestation. There might also not have enough people to help find those people but it helped manage the rate of deforestation.

Improved reinforcements

Scale poses a huge hurdle for any government agency seeking to enforce wildlife law over a large area. The Amazon rainforest covers 5.5 million square kilometers, and even with satellites flying overhead, someone has to be on the ground to enforce forestry laws. The Brazilian government got tough on rainforest crime with a series of high profile fines for violators by focusing their efforts on patrolling roads leading into the rainforest. Such focus by law enforcement increased the efficiency of patrols over such a large area. Hence, there will be lesser trees cut down.

In order to control logging, we need to purchase less furniture, food or anything that results in a loss of trees. When buying furniture, trees need to be cut down as they are made of wood. Foods come from agricultural yields and cattle ranching, which requires trees to be cut down for more land for agriculture and cattle ranching. Hence, to control logging, we need to play our parts.

The goal for public education is to teach and educate people why cutting down trees is bad and hoe it harms the environment. For example, when we use paper or buy furniture, trees need to be cut down as paper and furniture is made from trees. Hence, we need to advice people to use paper only when necessary and to recycle it. We also need to tell them what happens when trees are cut down like we lose the biodiversity and there will be lesser green lungs of the earth to take in the carbon dioxide emitted by us and therefore, harming ourselves too.

Over half of the Amazon forest is set as national parks or indigenous lands , which helps to stop deforestation greatly. This is because illegal logging is a problem that causes alot of trees to be cut down in Brazil, by making the lands national parks or indigenous lands, it makes it harder to illegally cut down trees as there are more people there visiting the park. When the area becomes a national park, government most likely to take actions and measure to keep the area safe from illegal logging. Thus this saves a big part of the Amazon forest from illegal logging.

Controlled logging is the restriction of cutting down trees in a sustainable and responsible way so that there will not be a significant decrease in the tree population. In the amazon, the cutting down of trees was greatly decreased as companies learnt to cut down trees responsibly and slowly. There may be some disadvantadges as well. For example, some companies might not be willing to comply and listen so they will still cut down trees at their own destructive rate.
