-Sam is fighting for the custody of his seven year old daughter, Lucy.
-When Lucy was born her mother left them, and Sam took on the full responsibility of caring for his daughter.
-Sam continued to work at Starbucks, so he could support Lucy.
-Lucy was taken away from Sam because child services did not think he could take care of her.
-Sam had to prove to the judges that he was fully capable of taking care of Lucy.
-Sam's lawyer Rita, was extremely supportive during his trial. At first, she was hesitant but in the end she was one of Sam's biggest support systems.

The purpose for this model was to demonstrate that people who suffer from a disability struggle in society because of the roadblocks that they may experience.

"However I, and others, have often pointed out that focusing on impairment and difference will only de-politicize the social model and will not lead to the development of any approaches or alternative models that are likely to be useful in developing campaigns to improve or defend the lifestyles of disabled people (Oliver, 2013)."

The people of the court automatically assumed that Sam could not care for Lucy because of his intellectual disability. They put his disability first, instead of trying to see what kind of person he truly was.

Language:
I noticed in the beginning of Sam's and Rita's relationship that she did not use people first language. At one point, while Rita was frustrated, she referred to Sam as "mentally retarded." In the beginning of the semester we learned how important it is to put the person first, then their disability.

Annie was Lucy's godmother who lived next door. Annie knew that Sam was struggling, and had Sam come over to her place and showed Sam how to feed Lucy, what time to feed her, and etc.
-Robert, Ifty, and Joe: The three of them were a big support system for Sam. They were the true definition of best friends. Every Wednesday they would go to IHOP, and they would have a game night every week. Sam's friends loved Lucy, and they loved doing things together with Sam and Lucy.
-Rita: Rita was hesitant in the beginning because she did not know what she was getting herself into. But, she agreed to work with Sam. She helped Sam dress appropriate for court, she worked with him on what to say in court, and most importantly she told him to never give up.
-Randy: She was somewhat hostile towards Sam in the beginning, but then she realized how important Sam was to Lucy. Sam made Randy realize that Lucy needed a mother figure in her life. It acts as the center of the relationship with the client. Ethics always needs to be considered.

An ethical issue that I noticed in the film would be Loretta, the social worker. She was so quick to judge Sam's capabilities. She did not give Sam a chance to prove how good of a parent he could be.
