Narrow AI

Narrow AI performs a single specific tasks that intelligent systems have been taught (usually without being sophistically programmed.  Examples include: voice recognition like Siri (for Apple) is an example) for Apple users and self-driving cars.

Machine and Deep Learning

Narrow AI is based on algorithms that try to imitated human intelligence. Machine learning takes in data and uses statistics to better learn the data for improvement. Machine learning is made up of both supervised (entering data sets) and unsupervised learning (finding patterns in unlabeled data).

Deep learning, also known as deep neural learning, is a type of machine learning technique that tries to imitate the human brain by inputting data through a biological-inspired neural network.  In these networks data is processed to make connections and creating patterns.

General AI

General AI is more complex because it tries to mirror human intellect using its ability to learn and apply the knowledge learnt to solve problems. We are now going through the process of transitioning from Narrow AI to General AI. 

Examples of AI Applications:

• Speech recognition: This is the process of enabling a computer to recognize spoken words and have the ability to respond, for example; Alexa 

• Language Processing: enables software to understand, interpret and generate the human language, for example; language translation. 

• Image recognition: This process can classify text, people, and objects. Examples of this are; fingerprint IDs, self-driving cars, and face recognition. 

Risks and Challenges of Artificial Intelligence:

1. Job Displacement: AI has the potential to automate many jobs, which could lead to significant unemployment and social unrest. It's essential to prepare workers for the changing job market and ensure they have the skills to adapt to new roles.

2. Bias and Discrimination: AI systems can perpetuate biases and discrimination if they're trained on biased data. It's crucial to develop AI systems that are fair, transparent, and accountable.

3. Privacy and Security: As AI systems collect and process vast amounts of data, there's a risk of privacy breaches and cyber attacks. Implementing robust security measures and data protection regulations is vital.

(WARNING: This can be a good example of inaccurate information as built by the same company behind Chat GPT).

When am not working, I like to read and to travel.

Because I work with teens, I find important to keep updated when it comes to methodologies and digital tools. I would suggest that you approach crafting your plan by answering the following questions.

1) Describe an assignment/project that you will either create with AI, or perhaps a project where you have your students using AI.

2) Identify the specific AI tool that you will use and how you will use it.

3) When you give this assignment, what specific guidelines are you going to give students about their use of AI.

4) What is your timeline and the expected outcome?

5) How is this change/addition going to benefit your students, your colleagues, and yourself?

Note: If you would rather focus on larger policy changes, that is fine too. It very much depends where you are in this process of implementing AI in your classrooms. Whatever you do, make it manageable and specific with a clear timeline and clear goals.

Also, if you want to stray from the above questions, that is absolutely fine. Remember, this time to plan is for your use!
