My diasporic space looks like me surrounded by the multiple communities I am a part of (Muslim, queer, Sri Lankan) celebrating our joy through music. My ideal space would be a constant exchange of music from the diaspora where we can laugh, dance, and cry together. My diasporic space would be a family for those who may not have a family that accepts them for who they are. My space would allow anyone to be themselves, unapologetically.

It allows me to be myself without having to explain and simple just allow a space that is comfortable not just for me, but for everyone around me. My diasporic space is actually public libraries (not just because I am a librarian). Libraries are the last spaces where one can go in without the expectation of having to buy anything, where one can get free services, access to technology, art, books, media, help, and so much more. What makes me sad is that these spaces are increasingly going away, increasingly in minoritized communities, due to funding and political ideologies. Librarians are being fired in spaces across the state for daring to promote or buy books or other media that goes against conservative ideology and the fear is that this censorship will increase under the Trump administration

My diasporic space would be somewhere that allows for intersecting identities to feel comfortable for everybody. I love Chinatown, but it can feel strange when I am with my white parents. The predominantly white spaces I grew up in feel less secure the older and more conscious of my race I become.

My diasporic space in undergrad was influenced by my identity as Gujarati, queer, first-generation through the undergraduate tutoring center. We focused on community building and solidarity work with undocumented student services, disability resource center, BSU, and EOP. It was a space where we would exchange information, oral histories, art, and music. My ideal space is one that would allow people to feel free like they don't have to sacrifice any part of themselves.

to me my ideal diasporic space is one that emphasizes sense of belonging by encouraging each other to share stories and empower each other in our individual identities
