The new Colts' stadium was being built so his dad was overseeing that project. His mom had no family in Indiana. Issues started to arise with his parents. 
During this first stage, "children need to be treated with consistent love and care and have their needs met by their parents so they could develop the capacity for trust." That wasn't the case for James. If there was cereal, there was no milk, and if there was milk there was no cereal, so he began making his own meals. There were never clean clothes for him to wear so he started doing his own laundry, too. His older siblings would leave him home alone to watch his brother with Down Syndrome. 
He was "creative and productive" working hard for him and his brother.

He was also introduced to smoking as his older siblings did. Even his own mom would run to the gas station to buy cigarettes for him. A few months later, he started hanging out with bad friends, drinking alcohol, and using drugs.
