By understanding the connection between vertical and horizontal interpersonal relationships, in addition to the other theories, a social worker may choose to bounce between these different practices to provide adequate assistance to the client. Sometimes it is beneficial for the worker/client relationship to be mutually beneficial and equally based from a power standpoint. Other times it may be necessary for the worker to establish a more vertical relationship with the client in order to facilitate a needed solution. By fully understanding the process of relationship formation over the course of a lifetime, in different eras and settings, a worker has a powerful tool in the assessment of problem-solving techniques.
