American modernism is a trend of philosophical thought arising from the widespread changes in culture and society. Modernism happened in the period of experimentation in the arts from late 19th to the mid- 20th century, in the years following World War 1. Modernism was important to people because it helped develop societies and the growth of cities. It brought a view of the meaning of life and how people treat each other. The characteristics of Modernism is it's marked by a strong and intentional break with traditions. They believe that the world is created in act of perceiving it; that is, the world is what we say it is.

https://courses.lumenlearning.com/boundless-arthistory/chapter/the-rise-of-modernism/

World War 1 helped usher in the modernist movement. The disillusionment that grew out of the war contributed to the emergence of modernism, a genre broke with traditional ways of writing, discarded romantic views of nature and focused on the interior world of characters. By the roaring twenties, Americans had more time and money to spend on new kinds of public amusements like dance halls, movie theaters, fun parks, and baseball stadium. By the mid 20's Americans bought over three-quarters of all furniture. The great depression was the worst economic in history. Causes of the Great Depression stock prices went far beyond realistic values and had a little basis in the health of the companies.
https://ap.gilderlehrman.org/essays/roaring-twenties
