On December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, Emily Dickinson was born. She only spent a year studying at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in South Hadley. During her teenage years, Dickinson was described as a quiet, well-dressed young girl who frequently carried or wore flowers. She left Holyoke after just a year for unspecified reasons, and she quickly started limiting the majority of her social interactions to her own family. Amherst was a small town at the time, heavily affected by the college, the railroad, and religion. This region had the highest proportion of ministers per capita in the entire country in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The daughter of Edward and Emily (Norcross) Dickinson, Emily Elizabeth was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, on December 10, 1830. Emily's father was a young, ambitious lawyer at the time of Emily's birth. He attended Yale and Amherst for his education before going back to his hometown to work for his father, Samuel Fowler Dickinson, whose legal firm was in trouble. In the Homestead, the family residence that Samuel Dickinson erected in 1813, Edward moved in with his father as well. Edward Dickinson, who was active in the Whig Party, won seats in the Massachusetts State Senate and the Massachusetts State Legislature between 1837 and 1839. (1842-1843). He represented Massachusetts in the United States Congress for one session, from 1852 to 1855. He prided himself on his civic activity as treasurer in Amherst and positioned himself as a role model citizen.

Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson's middle child, Emily, was born on December 10, 1830, at their homestead on Main Street in Amherst, Massachusetts. Only two months previously, Edward's parents, Samuel Fowler and Lucretia Gunn Dickinson, and several of Edward's siblings had moved into the Homestead to live with her parents and elder brother Austin. Great poet Emily Dickinson's life has remained a mystery. It's time to eliminate the notion of the cutesy, defenseless creature that gave up on life after being let down by love. I believe she had no fear of her own interests and abilities; that her brother's sexual betrayal and the ensuing family conflict had a significant impact on the Dickinson legend that has survived. Although not rare for girls in Amherst, Dickinson's formal education was unique for females in the early nineteenth century. She briefly attended a school in the Amherst region before spending around seven years at Amherst Academy before enrolling at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College) in 1847. The longest period of time she spent away from home was the year she spent at the Seminary.

Dickinson may have veered from publication during her lifetime because she did not want to alter her work in order to appease the public and make it more accessible, and this is exactly what Todd and Higginson did. Hope is the Thing with Feathers Is her most known poem.
