The origins of LEGO can be traced back to Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter, who founded a toy company in Denmark. Wooden toys and household items were the company's initial products, but with the scarcity of wood in World War II, Christiansen switched to plastic as a medium. In 1949, an early version of the interlocking plastic bricks was produced, and the journey began.

It was in 1958 when Christiansen's son, Godtfred, introduced the brick design still used today. The patented stud-and-tube system provided stronger connections, so builders could construct more complex creations.

To make building easier for younger children, DUPLO, larger, chunky bricks, were introduced in 1969. The following decades have witnessed LEGO's expansion globally with themed sets and minifigures.
