15. Mental health in young adults/ children
'Young adults and child have an equal risk as adults for fatal mental state'

It is a stigma in our society that children and young adults do not experience extensive stress or trauma that could lead to the development of mental illness within their prepubescent and pubescent years.

Key points:
- The brain does not reach full functionality until 25, until you reach the age of 25 the brain is fully susceptible to life alterating changes.
- Their are various leading facts that exasterbate the development of mental illness before the frontal lobe is fully developed.
- Generation z has some of the highest statics based on mental health severity compared to other studies formated.
- The level of anixety found in the younger generation is almost trippled what would've been found in a patient in a mental asylum

Which is why I want to promote the concept that despite age, mental illness lives in everyone and we shouldn't shut down the severity of it due to individuals age. By creating a promotional advertisement to highlight the need to recognise mental illness in all individuals and to act accordingly rather then ignoring the obvious.

WEEK 1: Record your initial thoughts and feelings about the course and this task.

Initially, before this course commenced, I roamed the campus in hope of finding the class before it began, this proved challenging. Despite all the building being labelled clearly to the eye, this mixture of nervousness and lack of direction cause me to become quite overwhelmed with this new chapter in my life. However, after seeing most students around me also standing with looks of confusion written on their face, it calmed me down enough for me to pursue and find my class. It took a few moments for me to allocate the correct classroom as all of the rooms look almost identical, it was comforting seeing faces within the same age range as me, and also similar aesthetics.

I never knew how well I would take onto this new chapter in my life with no familiar faces surrounding me, its forcing me outside my comfort zone and pushing me to achieve my personal best without the distractions of my friends presence around me. As I overlooked the assessment previously during orientation week, I knew somewhat what i was walking into. I’ve never done assignments this major before and have no idea where to even begin the process of completion. It’s comforting, however, knowing that their is such a strong support system from the teacher and tutors within this course. Giving a guiding push on how to approach the assessment, which is something I seeked out to find within the course.

Tone and Emotion are vital in advertising as it sets the mood for product and service. Tone can be used verbally and non-verbally such as written text
V E R B A L
how things are spoken
- raising in octave, speaking faster, stumbling words to indicate happiness/ excitement
- speaking slower, lower in octave indicating sadness

N O N - V E R B A L
how things are worded
- using strong statements such as 'you will do this' 'you will purchase that' indicating an aggressive method of persuasion
- using calmer statements such as 'you should look into' to guide someone towards the product/ service

In my promotional video I will be using a combination of both non-verbal and verbal tone to convey different emotions and messages. By using the combination, it will enhance and highlight the true intent of the video, pushing people to act on their instinct and help the ones around them rather then sitting back.

Using thoughtful/ empathetic and calming nature to verbally speak the dialogue, whilst using harsh and realistic factual content, such as written statistics to back up the severity of the situation.

Various advertising companies usually stick to making the viewer happy by connecting the product/ service to family, or sad due to global events. In my instance I am focusing more towards the sad, enhancing the harsh reality of mental illness in young adolescence in order to raise awareness for those who don't know how to ask for help as they're not adults

"typography is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes the copy legible, clear, and visually appealing to the reader" - Jaye Hannah (CareerFoundry.com Jan 5 2022)

In the brief test shown above, it is a clear indicator the level of emotion each box holds.
The far left box: does not hold any emotional indicators, doesn't overwhelm individuals as it is a normal font

Itallic box: usually indicates a quote or reference point

Bold box: indicates aggression and certainty, factual context that people need to see first - the average eye will naturally guide to what has been printed in bold

Both box: calmer approach to certainty, more approachable and isn't as intimidating.

All of these examples will be used throughout the promotional video and website for different purposes lists above. As for the type of font that will be used is unsure of, as no fonts have any ulterior motive apart from aesthetics. Whether it is just left up to the aesthetics of the video which leads to the desirable font, however, at this rate I will be focusing on the use of typography and how to put it in active use.

One of the primary things taught in Stage 2 Psychology in Highschool is the application of Colour theory with emotions.
The basic comprehension of colour theory in advertisement:
Red - excitement, energy, passion, action, desire
Orange - Optimistic, Uplifting, rejuvenating, friendliness, fun
Yellow - Confidence, Optimism, Friendliness, Enthusiasm, happiness
Green - Reassurance, Balance, Refreshing, growth, hope
Blue - Intelligence, serenity, authority, honesty, trust
Purple - Creativity, spirituality, individuality, quality, royalty
white - cleanliness, purity, equality, peace

This is why a lot of fast food chains use red, such as McDonalds, KFC and Hungry Jacks and Red can initiate feelings of desire and excitement despite not truly knowing the product/ service.

In the scenario of creating a promotional video about mental health awareness, the colours white, blue, green and yellow should be most frequent.

A brief description for how the promotional video will look

The ad starts with a 10-second video of parents and their teenage children sitting outside, the trees are swaying in the wind, it is a bright day outside - not a cloud in the sky. They all appear to be smiling and laughing with one another, but one of the teenagers turns around, the lighting darkens - so does their mood. Text floats around their head of harmful thoughts, thoughts such as ‘why can no one see i’m hurting’, they look into the camera with the word depression written behind them.

A second 10-second video plays of a student in uni with a bunch of friends at a party, despite the friends enjoying themselves, the uni student plays with the end of their jumper, continuously looking around. Common phrases said such as ‘come on, just be fun for once’ (peer pressure), the lights dull as the student looks towards the camera - the word anxiety appears behind the student

The photo capture of the last video - the student with anxiety behind them will escalate smaller - a collage will start to emerge of different people, varying ages, varying mental illness. More individuals will keep being added to the screen until it reaches 15x15 images. Resulting from this will be the facts appearing on the screen - the statistics of untreated mental health + severity in young adolescence.

Cutting to 1-second videos reflecting back on those scenarios but with the help of friends and family. At the end of the video will be a white screen, with the phrase ‘make the first step’ with a list of Australian helplines.
